View Full Version : If I step up my 6800GS to a 7900GT will I see a big difference in FPS?

Hey,

I am getting like 30FPS outside and 60FPS inside while playing oblivion. This is at stock speeds, I havnt oced the 6800GS yet.

I have aprox. 2 weeks left in my step up program and I was wondering if I would see a increase in FPS using a 7900GT over the 6800, if so how much? Is it worth it to upgrade the card at this point in time?

Thanks

It would be a crazy increase. It would definately be a smart decision. Maybe atleast and extra 20fps if nothing else in your system slows you down.

yes it would increase.

When I moved from the 6800GT to the 7800GT, my games runs a lot smoother and faster on CSS. I can set CSS to the highest setting. Your jump will be a bigger jump than mine. I totally recommend you to go with the step up program.

definitely looks like a speed increase to me :)

yes it would be a nice increase in speed in all your games but don't be looking for 20extra fps in oblivion. what will happen is you'll end up cranking the graphics up to the max and still have playable speed.

with a 7800 gt i get 40fps outside in most areas but in deep forest's its like 25fps. and in side in dungions i get around 80fps all setting to the max kinda low res 1024 x768 due to it being hard to read txt i pick a lower res.

would i trade up to the 7900? you bet.

im gona be trading the 7800 for the 7900 but im waiting to see if anything new comes out like a 7900 gt KO i have 20 days left.

here is a ? no one has asked what is evga is doing with all the 90 day old cards we are trading in? hm i might have to rethink getting the 7900 and go sli if evga will sell the trade in cards cheap.

Yeh I wanted to see if that 7900 GT KO would be out also, my last day to step up is april 21st. I have a fealing the KO will just be a superclocked thats faster, has a nice ass heatsink and is much more expensive.

Probably 50-60 dollars more than the 7900 GT CO, if it ends up being really really good I might just ghange queues.

i picked up my 7800 gt co jan 26th so i think i have till the 25th.
ill jump in the Que on the 23rd or so just to make sure everything gets started.
the way my isp is i better order on the 21st they tend to suck every weekend something is down and i don't trust my email.
i payed $314 for my 7800 so if the KO comes out and is around $375 or so ill probably get that if not its the superclocked one for me.

lol man i hope it don't take to long to swap cards with evga the only pci card i could find to keep this sys running is a voodoo 3 2000.

hm wonder if it will even work with 3dmark06 hehe that would be to funny a blistering score of 8 or 15.

Don't feel bad. I have an S3 Virge PCI in mine while I wait for my 7900gt co to get here. I can't even run 3dmark. I can't run any benchmarks for that matter. So I'd say my score is probably in the negatives. I turned my overclock on my cpu off till that card gets here. Seems like a waste to have 2.7ghz and my pc can barely use half that without a video card. I never even heard of an S3 Virge before I pulled this one out of an old rusty pc in my attic

Lol, well I may know which video card would be faster then the last but I don't know which of those would be faster lol.

I knew it was going to be better, what I meant was is it worth the difference price wise. Either way I'm already in the step up for the 7900GT CO

I think the GT CO is reasonable upgrade, but the superclocked isn't clocked much higher and its a lot more. GT CO seems like the best choice.

Thats what I thought, the only thing left is to see what happens with this 7900GT KO, hopefully it will be released before the end of my step up that way if its a great increase I might fork out the money to choose that instead. Would also give me a chance to hop in the beginning of the queue :p

The queue isn't very long at all. It only took like 2 or 3 days before I was in front.

I hope they didnt do anythign to the card to prevent people from volt modding now that everyone is getting gtx speeds with only 1.4v :) on the 7900gt's

i am on the same boat too, considering upgrading from 6800GT AGP to 7900GT. Dang Oblivion at 1680x1050 is killing my card.

Well I can tell you that I went from 6500 and some change to 8500 and some change in 3dmark 05' 6800GS@534/1250 to 7900GT@550/1750. Also my system is holding me back the card is so much stronger. I upgraded monitors same time I got the 7900 so all I can tell you is going from a 17"CRT at 1024x768 to a 20.1 LCD at 1600x1200 with all the eye candy on the FPS are still higher.

I'll be buying them for half price as refurbs at NewEgg :D

Oblivion is just a bad "port" to the PC, my overclocked 7800gtx and 2gb of RAM only puts out about 20fps on average on that game!

I have everything maxed and I get atleast above 30 at all times. Are you sure everything in your system is set right?

mangyrat

i get around 28-45fps outside and 54-80fps inside.
res 1024x768 bloom and 4xaa maxed sliders on everything but shadows.

Yes, I have played it before and after a fresh Windows install. Tried several different drivers, did the tweaks to make there be less grass, etc. and also tried the "reduce "Max Frames to render ahead" from 3 to 1. Some things helped a little but nothing too good. I sometimes get 60+fps inside (caves, etc.) but if there are people talking, moving, etc. forget it about it.

IS your cpu or video card overclocked at all?

IS your cpu or video card overclocked at all?

Yeah, usually my clock is between 470/1300 to 500/1320, etc.

My 3Dmark05 score was 8346

My CPU isn't overclocked any, as I have the stock cooling stuff still.

mangyrat

you say if people talking, moving, etc. that tells me it may be sound related.
what sound card you using?

if i play on my laptop with that built in ac97 sound it will take a bad hit when people are talking and moving around in towns.
but with my desk top and Sound Blaster its fine.

Kenshiro

I think you can do some minor overclocking with the stock heatsink. I seriously doubt that a mild increase by 200mhz is going to damage your cpu at all.

I'm using the onboard sound on my Asus SLI Premium mobo. Haven't bought a sound card yet due to the fact that I only use some Logitech 2.1 speakers and headphones right now.

As for OCing the CPU, what's the highest people have OCd them on the stock cooling? :)

Oblivion has had problems with the built in sound chips. some "in the Oblivion forum" solved it with new sound drivers. i think the worst offenders are the ac97 ones.

if you have a old Sound card laying around any soundblaster card try that and see if it helps.

Please close this thread, its moving further and further away from what I really meant.

Also I'm already in the queue for the 7900GT CO.
