Ive narrowed down my choice of PSU to these 2.... should i get the Fortron 500W or the Antec 500W

Im leaning towards the Antec for now becuase its got modular cables and 10 bucks cheaper...

Modular PSU's are normally a little weaker than the ones that arent.

Fortron > Antec

the Fortron AX-500-A Blue Storm is actually rated at 460w, if that is indeed the one you're talking about

I'd recommend the Antec before the Fortron. It's surprisingly capable.

I own that Antec. I'll say that it's barely capable of running my current rig in sig, and it flat out restarts the computer and shuts down intense games pretty often. It's good enough to get by, but it's not a good long-term solution at all, especially if you plan on overclocking. Only reason I got mine, was because my previous computer has an Antec 550W TrueControl. That's decent, but it's not near as strong a computer as my new one. Also, it seemed like a good deal, because newegg had it for a great discount at $35 around xmas time.

Personally, I'm waiting for those new OCZ PSUs to come out. This power supply will definitely be the first thing I get rid of in my computer.

I'd ask OklahomaWolf since he seems to know the pedigree of most decent PSUs and could help you understand how they truely stack up.

In reviews I've seen most Fortrons will supply well beyond the rated spec. So will many Antec's however Antecs are rebadged versions of other maker's PSU and they are not all equal. I have 2 Antecs True Power PSUs and I like them quite well, but around here you can't seem to go wrong with Fortron.

I've owned and used both Antec/CWT units and Fortron units. While I rather like them both, I just don't see myself buying or recommending an Antec before a Fortron. Antec (and their OEM CWT) needs to fix the cooling and/or start using decent capacitors before I will do so.

It's frustrating to me that they won't address that issue, considering their designs are easily good enough to compete on a level with Fortron if they would only cool them better. Or be more discriminating in selecting their capacitor suppliers. Or both.

So, since modularity and silence are not a priority to me, I would have to go with Fortron. If silence is desired, the Zalman 460W is a newer FSP Green unit, and Nexus offers a rebadged AX500-A in a black case with a quiet fan.

Fortron

EDIT: Since when did they start making the Smartpowers modular?

i think the 500w is the only modular and i think the mobo connector is permanently attached unlike some fully modular supplies, haven't looked recently, could be wrong

That is the way that mine is set up.
