Many companies disallow access to external email to stop private or privileged information from being leaked. This also allows them to control viruses and email-based attacks using their own systems. By circumventing all of the protection, especially through a public 3rd party site or application, you are exposing your company to privacy lawsuits, and other issues surrounding security of information.
Circumventing your work's network security is not only grounds for firing you and lawsuits against you, but is also not a welcome topic on the forums.

Undoubtedly if so, that is their policy. Since it's also their computers, their bandwidth, and you're on their payroll, it sure seems you should follow their policy.
Imagine the productivity lost when all the employee's EXPECT to get their emails, surf the net as they wish, and naturally, compose answering emails and posts in various forums, like this one.
Snails, slugs and tortoises would flash by your employee's productivity level, at blinding speed! :burn: :burn:
If you want to keep your job, and keep your employer productive and making money, I strongly suggest you support and follow the "no private email or internet" strategy they're trying to make.
College policies are rather different in intent. They're just trying to keep their bandwidth lower and take reasonable steps to keep their students from wasting time, and getting the college involved in any lawsuits. They also don't have a balance sheet with owners breathing down their necks for profitability, or have to make payroll every week or two.
