i ran the rpm but i dont think they changed.

After you install the rpm, you have to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and change the references to driver "nv" to be "nvidia"

Thats all it should take. On your distro, /etc/X11/XF86Config could be another distro, so YMMV.

level 4? What the hell are you talking about? You mean runlevel 4? Because thats just like runlevel 3, but without nfs, if I rememeber correctly.

im just trying to pul stuff up from when redhat 5 made me choose run levels....
but which ever you are in before you startx.

startx doesn't change your runlevel. Just edit XF86Config-4 in a text editor.

What are you talking about?

XF86Config-4 doesn't mean run level 4, it has nothing to do with run level 4. The -4 simply means it's XF86 version 4.x apposed to version 3.x.

Run level is changed in your /etc/inittab file. Just edit it and every sane distribution will tell you what everything in it means.

i never said there was any association between XF86Config-4 and runlevel 4.........
and btw we fixed it.
i change the driver reference "nv" to "Nvidia". that was bad shoulda been "nvidia".
then i installed wolf mp and that didnt work cause i forgot to add the
Load "glx"
reference in there.
but i fixed it and now ever thing is peachy

Which is a little bit of miss-understanding on my part, but I associated the 2 because both of you were had the levels incorrect, there is no run level 4. Sorry for that

And here's what /etc/inittab says what each run level is for future reference:

Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
1 - Single user mode
2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
3 - Full multiuser mode
4 - unused
5 - X11
6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

Ah, ok, I confused level 4 with level 2. I was too lazy to look at my inittab.

I spent like 2 hours on irc with Tbird to get his nvidia card working.

It could have all been avoided if he just read the readme.

He had only installed the kernel rpm. didn't know the glx rpm existed, even though the link was like right there.

then he didn't set up his config file.

and then I forgot about the load glx part, because this is mostly fire and forget on my machine.

All was in the readme.
