Cat5 - catagory 5 network cable, 4 pairs of 2 cables twisted in a cable. (100-1000Mbs)
Cat3 - catagory 3 network cable, ? pairs of 2 cables twisted in a cable.

10 - 10Mbs Base - baseband network T - twisted pair
10 - 10Mbs Base - baseband network 2 - 200 meters (actually like 185 - thin net)
10 - 10Mbs Base - baseband network 5 - 500 meters (thick net)
10BaseT - 10Mbs (Megabits a second network) usually over cat5.
10Base2 - 10Mbs over coax (thin net)
10Base5 - 10Mbs over coax (thick net)
100BaseTx - 100Mbs over cat5.
UTP - Unshielded Twisted Pair (cat5, cat3, etc...) (or the joke UN-twisted pair)
STP - Shielded Twisted Pair (Or the joke single twisted pair)

just buy cat5 cable... www.belkin.com has a good sort of them, altho there a bit costly for them, but they are really good.

Cat5 is a type of cable, the speed of the NIC is a seperate issue.

The speed at which your network runs is dependant on the NIC's.
If you buy 10Mb NICs you will have a 10Mb network. If you buy 100Mb NICs you will have a 100Mb network. This is assuming you purchase a 10/100Mb HUB/Switch.

99% of all network cable is Cat5 UTP. This is what you want.
You have no need for STP, Cat3, or Coax.
