Soon DDR2 will probably be wiped off the shelves for those people who have held the current upgrade say from 754 or Sk A. Or even 939 I've also read that companies are going to a confrence about future memory etc. What about Laptops will they be seeing a faster format of memory SO-DIMM is getting old isn't it surely we'll see something SO-DIMM2 which is faster.

Or have then done that already?

Lets see laptop memory, there is DDR and DDR2 already for laptop. If there will be dd3 then it will be applied to laptops too in future.

The Pentium M-generation is compatible with both architectures, depending on the chipset. The 915 mobile chipset supports both DDR1-333 single channel and DDR2-533 dualchannel.

AMD's upcoming laptop-socket S1 will support dualchannel DDR2.

don't expect DDR3 anytime soon

meionm is correct. Intel has already implemented DDR2 in laptops (example here (http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/nb_xpsm170?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs)) and AMD will be implementing DDR2 in their laptops later on this year (article here (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=16526)). As for the next generation memory, that will not be here for at least another year or two. DDR2 is just finally being adopted by AMD, and I forsee it being used for the next few years while engineers try to work out specifications and kinks in DDR3.

Graphics card makers currently use a type of memory called GDDR3, but you must not get that confused with DDR3 as they are different types of memory (more on this can be found at the links below). Other possible future forms of memory technology include XDR and QDR which are being worked on as we speak. (XDR will be used in the upcoming Playstation 3).

As for SO-DIMM (aka small outline dual in-line memory module), it is just a smaller version of DDR SDRAM DIMMs (the memory sticks which we put in our computers). These sticks are half the size of regular sticks of memory and are used in mainly laptops, and so are virtually identical to desktop sticks in terms of performance and speed.

Below are a list of links that you might want to visit, so that you can read more about the different memory technologies.

DDR2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR2)
DDR3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM)
GDDR3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDDR3)
QDR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quad_Data_Rate_SDRAM)
XDR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDR_DRAM)
