View Full Version : wow, optimized client does wonders.

I just built a new rig using an AMD 64 3700+ E4. I haven't OC'd it yet, but it was doing a WU in about 2 hrs. I put on the optimized client lastnight, and WU time dropped to around 1 hr. That was serious jump. My old systems was an OC'd 2600+ and the optimized clients never really had that much of an improvement.
Yes its because your amd64 rig can use SSE2 instruction set that gives huge boost in performance.
oh and good luck if you are planning to OC that system. Remember to post some seti completition times when OCed.

Yeah the SSE optimized clients really make a difference. I got a celeron with SSE3 and it puts out pretty good for a celeron. ~230 RAC
Wish I had SSE3 and EM64T on my Xeons though... :(

I DL'd the SSE3 client for AMD64. Should I switch it to the SSE2? My CPU supports SSE3 according to CPU-Z.

Wow. Correction, my WU time dropped to around 40-50 mins a WU. All I got to say is WOW.

I personally use the SSE3 clients and find they offer a good ~5min jump over the SSE2 clients, but make sure its a Crunch3r client ;) http://guntec.de/crunch3r/ ...with that beauty my 3000+ E3 @ 2583 is doing sub 40min WUs.. usually 35-41mins. Really impressed by it.

Yep, that's the one I'm using.

The truxoft optimized boinc client helps too

yeah, the calibrated core client is excellent. took my pcs about 15-20units to get it just right, but now im claiming 32-34cs for each WU :).. gave quite a nice little bump in RAC :)

I see a crunch3r and a trux optimized being touted in this thread. Which is best or should I be using both? I remain puzzled by this optimized client subject and would really like to see a definitive thread explaining the process with links so it can be made into a sticky.

You want to use both. Crunch3r's clients make use of the extended properties of the CPU like SSE2, SSE3, etc, based on the cpu you are using so that wu's crunch faster/more effiecently. The truxoft optimized BOINC will calibrate the wu credit given to average 30-32cs a wu as the goal on credit from the SETI platform (don't remember where I saw those #'s...), but takes about 20-30 wu's crunched before you see a difference in cs granted. You can look at my computers (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=49122) (the 2.53/messalina for example as it is new) to see how the claimed credit comes out. Hope that helps some...

Makes me wish I knew how to script this so it would "patch" all my clients with a single executable.

Ok, I grabbed the trux and the crunch3r downloads.
Problem: They both contain customizations of the same files. Which ones do I apply first?

Hmm. The files shouldn't be the same.
To start with, you probably want to make a back up of BOINC before proceeding.
Then, you want to make sure you are using the most current version of BOINC (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php), otherwise these optimizers will not work.
With that, if you had to install the new version or using existing install if it's current, close BOINC. Now, you will want to unzip the truXoft Boinc core client (http://boinc.truxoft.com/core-cal.htm) (click the download link on the web page) files into the C:\program files\BOINC\ folder (or where ever BOINC is installed on your system).
Now, with this new setup, open BOINC and attach to the SETI project to get those folders created, then exit BOINC again (skip this step if already attached to SETI...).
Now you will want to install Crunch3r's SETI optimizer (http://www.guntec.de/Crunch3r/setix86.html) (goto the bottom of the page to select the correct file for your cpu, and keep in mind the current files are better than the old ones (at least for me)).
After selecting the correct file for your system, you will want to unzip/extract those files into the "../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu" folder, and if you get any pop ups about replacing files, select yes to override them.
Now restart BOINC, and run the CPU benchmark, and then enjoy some faster crunched wu's and higher points.
Something you may want to do after making sure this works, is close BOINC and edit the truxoft_prefs.xml in the BOINC folder to return_results_immediately, and set it for cpu_affinity. There are other config options for the prefs.xml file as well and those are explained on the truxoft web page (near the bottom...).
Once you have everything set, restart BOINC. :)
I hope this jumble made any sense.

Woot! A solution!!! Thank you very much for the instructions :)

Instructions followed, line of text added to the trux xml to call for immediate reporting of work units.
However my restarted boinc client did not upload the unit when it was completed.. Did I miss something?

hm, that is weird. Youre getting messages like:
13/04/2006 4:05:35 p.m.|SETI@home|CC calibration: 19.78 >> 35.25 (time: 2947s >> 3155s / Gfpops: 2.63 >> 10.34)
arent you? If not then it sounds like the boinc.exe hasnt been updated properly.. also, check your account online and see if your pc's connecting times have changed; my pcs used to reset their locations when I updated the boinc.exe client.. just a thought :)

My machines don't always upload the results right away, and may sit on them for an hour or so. Usually when this happens, I have that communication deferred message... Anyway, seeing how you posted last night, is it still not working?

I'll let you know later tonight when I get home. Thanks to all of you for your assistance, this is an amazing place :)

Ok, looks like the fix worked. The rig transmitted units without my intervention today. Thank you again for all the help, and everybody needs to follow these procedures and get their rigs optimized.

Every single member of our team should run the optimized clients, the gains are just enormous.

Optimization is the way to go. My old cruncher - a Barton 3200 at stock use to chew a WU in 1:15 Hours with optimized client. So at optimal performance I could get as much as 19 WU´s per day from a old beast.
Now assume you have a Barton 2500 - I bet you could OC it to 3200 level and get something like 22-23 WU´s per day due to higher FSB. Not bad from and old SOc A CPU
If you consider building a new pc for SETI, you want to purchase a P4 930 or 940. Those can provide a RAC of at least 2000 at stock with optimized client. Maybe even as high as 2500
2 of those P4 could get one a top spot!!!
