Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a laptop, my only requriements are:

-Intel Pentium M or AMD Turion processor
-512MB RAM (or lower, as long as I can upgrade it myself!)
-decent video hardware (enough to run 2D smoothly of course)

I've been looking around, and apparently these types of systems are much more expensive than Desktop equivilants, not cool. So can someone help me out here?

I was also thinking, hey, Barebone might be a cheap solution, but apparently that's nearly as pricey also, what's the deal?

if CHEAP is the goal.. i'll have to recommend *shutters* gateway, i have a few 200ARC models, they are light but with good screens, centrino and are 400-500 bucks, the cheapest centrino option on the market right now. memory you can always add later, they come with 1.4-1.5ghz banias processors

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look them up.

I honestly HATE shopping for laptops on the maufactuerers sites...cause they BS everything.

Well I checked, and they didn't have any (on their site) for under $650 :(

I really can't believe the prices of laptops, ridiculous.

i mean have you looked at any refurbs on ebay ?

EDIT: another good solution is you pickup an inspiron 1200 with a celeron chip for maybe $550, and then put a dothan chip into it when you get your funds up.

yeah i see what you mean, you might want to just get a new 1200 and then upgrade it as you get cash

Hmm, will laptops like that be upgradeable, like could I put a Pentium M in place of the Celeron M? I'm really not crazy about Celerons at all.

EDIT: I saw your edited haha oops, thanks.

i mean inspiron 1200's are pretty solid, they are black and can pass for thinkpads on a foggy day, heh - put some good memory into it and a good processor you've got a nice little machine , i wonder if the video cards on these are upgradable
