ok so i got a pretty nice laptop which my friend thinks is dead, but i know just needs formatting, unfortunately he has password protected the bios, (i think it was him) and he dont remember the password!!

i need to boot from cd rom to reinstall windows!! it wont let me in, ive tried the standard "password" and "pheonix" etc... but to no avail??

The only way i know of, is by taking out the CMOS battary for about an hour or so to reset it.

You'll have to take it apart to get to the CMOS battery, which could be complicated.

They should have disassembly instructions or a shop manual on their website. I have one for my dell and toshiba notebooks. It gets pretty simple to do on any laptop once you do it a few times.

Try this link:
http://www.laptoprepairguy.com/laptop/category/laptop-service-manual/
It links to somewhere else that has a link to download the manual for your laptop, which is here:
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/10209/ACER_ACER%20Aspire%201670.html

*Edit: Also, there should be a backdoor bios password. I forget which ones acer uses but if I find my list I'll post back and let you know :p

*Edit: Here's a small list, but I'm not sure if any of them are right or if they will work for your notebook.

I'll keep looking for my list though.

On dell notebooks if you remove all sources of power (ac and battery) and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds it does a cmos reset... you should give that a try just in case Acer was smart enough to do something like this... it would definatelly spare you from taking the lappy apart...
