Gigabyte Network

I'm still not very know ledgable about networks..
What mostly confuses me.. are switches..
Basically... For my small home network, I use a simple 10/100 Mbps router ( A Linksys WRT54GS)
It works great..

I start getting confused.. with Gigabyte LAN...
I'd love to set up my (wired) computers for a gigabye LAN.. I know I'll need Cat5e or better cabling.. but what about the router.. since I basically have never found an affordable gigabyte router, yet there are.. affordable gigabye switches, I know they can be used to "split up" my internet connection and network my PCs.. but.. how exacly would I have to se this up?
Mostly.. what's the difference between a router and a switch?
And how would I set it up (preferably still with teh router I have) so My laptop can access the network wirelessly aswell?

get yourself a gigabit switch and plug one of the ports from that switch into the 4port switch built into the router and then connect your computers to the gigabit switch

Thats what i'm doing at the moment and it works great. The router still does it's DHCP stuff and the gigabit keeps things fast.

Agreed, keep the router, get a gigabit switch and you will be good to go.

Also keep in mind you keep saying gigaBYTE it's not the same as gigaBIT. Networking products are measured in bits not bytes. For example 1 gigaBYTE is the same as 8 gigaBITS. so you aren't on a 100 megaBYTE network you are on a 100 megaBIT network.

I Have next router model up from that one, Mine has the Wireless access with it. Its been a great router, will have to agree with other people on the forums that its gets warm, but I keep it in a cool place so i havent had problems with it.

That gamers lounge router is sweet, setup is easy and it's got the latest encryption. It can allocate bandwidth for your games so your ping doesn't increase while you're downloading.

Hm.. wow... Alright.. Maybe I'll just the wireless verion of that gamers lounge router... Is there an 8 port wireless version?

i got the wireless one for my brother. he also runs his x-box wireless to and a laptop to . no problems with it --.at my house . i run the 1000 speed switch it`s a 8 port at the end of a 300ft cat 5e wire with the gamer lounge on the other end i think max ft is 340 or 360ft i`m not shure something like that .then 100ft cables comeing off the switch to this computer . the thing thats cool is the router is at 1000 speed after it for your home network
