I am wondering a lil info on the Athlon T-Bird 1400 w/266 fsb which I am running now..my set up is this T-bird 1400 @ 1470 OCed,MSI K7 Master mother board,Micron 256megs DDR 2400, Maxtor 30 gig ATA 100 hard drive,VooDoo 5500 video card,Sound Blaster Live 5.1,Pioneer 16X DVD, LG 12X8X32 CDRW, 330 power supply..Thermotake Dragon orb,1 intake fan,2 exhaust fans and 1 in and 1 out fan on the power supply..so my cooling is enough I believe but what I need help with is this..the CPU as of right now is running 140 degrees F/60C 150 degrees F loaded.. now why is this? Voltage is VCore 1.74v,Voltage 2.56v...If I could get a lil help it would be nice I need to learn from the best and I heard this was the place to go..my lil overclocking skills I have done was reading a few colums here and there about overclocking..but I am a newbie in the overclocking field but I have to start somewhere..huh..here is picture of the guts..If you need a lil more info or another closer picture..just let me know..Thanks

Hmm....not to sure why your running so high. Could be the orb?

I'm using a Thermaltake Valcano 6Cu+ and well look at my sig for temps and OC.

From your pic it looks like youve done alright with the ventalation, better then mine right now actually.

Anyone here have some ideas, why he's running so hot???

I have a few questions
what are you measuring temp with, what is your case temp, and what is the ambient temp

I like your case
which antec is it?

OK I put another intake case fan in the girl...and it lowered the temp very little..so I backed her off down to 1400 again..she is running CPU temp 114F and case temp 75F.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what are you measuring temp with? PC Alert 3 it is software program that comes with MSI boards..also came up with same temp in Bios monitoring system.

I like your case
which antec is it?It is a Enermax case w/330 Enermax power supply.

First I would see what that DragonOrb has between itself and the CPU. If there is tape, I'd remove it and use Arctic Silver 2 on it. Otherwise, I'd probably go out and get a bigger heatsink/fan combo, with a copper base (or all copper). I changed the HSF a couple weeks ago and it kicked my cpu temp down at least by 10 degrees C. Plus I'm only using the RadioShack Silcone-based Heatsink Compound.

Right now, I'm running my 1 gig T-bird @ 1400 MHz. Temp is 39 C idle (27 C using http://www.naggelgames.de/vcool/VCool.html) and 52 C Full Load.

for awhile i thought you were my buddy, he has Same case and the Same AMD WHOOP A** badge. AnD Blue cables, and same Pionerr CDR. he also has a 1400 266, and has teps of bout 59c. Dunno why either, using a SK6 and a delta 38, weird that ia a great case but dotn seem to col weel, try getting higher quality fans to repolace the ones that are in there. You CANNOT beat Panaflo 80mm fans from www.pcmods.com GREAT QUITE FANS, and yes maybe change out the orb for a better HS

Yeah, just by looking at your picture,,, ur problem is that orb heatsink.. its pretty much trash for an overclocker.. go with a Thermalright SK-6 and make sure you use some thermal paste when u mount your heasink.

You might want to try to tie back some of the cables and wires so you can get a good flow or air through your case.I don't think this will solve all your heat problems but it will help some.

OK I am looking at the Vantec CCK-6035 to replce the Thermotake..the Vantec has copper base and 7,000 RPM fan with 38+CFM  now that is some air flow!! I can get it for around 20 bucks...as for case fans? I will have to hold on awhile becuase it will cost me like 70 bucks to replace the 2 intakes and 2 exhaust...I know right now my intake is huge I can feel the suction of the intakes in front of the case..today I stoped by radio shack and the guys in there are like :o they don't know what a CPU was lol..so I did a lil training..bought some small plastic ties and got all the wires up and out of the air flow..Right now I am running the 1400@1470 Temp idle is 138F/59C..Case temp 80F/27C....Bios settings on Frequency/Voltage Controls
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI CLK----Enabled
Spread Spectrum Modulated--Disabled
CPU Host/PCI Clock------------140/35MHZ
CPU Vcore------------------------Default
CPU Ratio------------------------Default
now I don't know if this is right..all I leanred was by reading and a lil trial and error..so if someone else has the MSI K7 Master OCed tell me a little bit about it..

Damn that's hot! :)

Myself I thought I was having cooling problems in my case! I'm modding my case over the next few days to add a top mounted exaust fan to help vent the heat my PSU generates. I'm finding that since I put the 350Watt PSU in that I bought my case temps have increased. Thus increasing my CPU temps and such!

Each and every little thing in a system setup must be taken into consideration. My next project is going to have a nice server size case so as to lift my PSU away from my Mobo.

BTW: were are you situated? I can get three GREAT 80mm fans for a case right now for under 30bucks CDN. A little more if I get it online!

And then that Vantec, Hmmmm.... not to scare you , as I know a lot of people have had great results but it is in my personal opinion it's icky! :D It actually made my CPU temps worse in some cases on my 1.4 and that was without OCing the CPU. I personally like the Valcano I'm running right now! I'm Oced to 1600 and it's keeping my CPU at the same temp I had with my stock HSF at 1400.

Well I wish you luck with that case. BTW! Does it make a great or little difference as to temp in your case if you leave the side off? Do you see a Large decrease or a small decrease in overall system temps? That might give you some clues as to what to do! My case currently runs at over 5oC higher with case closed. That's why I'm adding more ventelation. :)

I am also looking for a good program to see the temps of the CPU,MO and speed of fans anyone have a good one that I can downlaod?:)

Cube

Yeah, that Vcool program lets you see all of that when you put the mouse pointer over the Temps displayed next to your Windows Clock.

I use a DRAGON ORB 3 the Dragon orb 1 is only 5000 rpm and WON'T cool it. You'll burn it up

Motherboard Monitor: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
It will read fans, temps, voltages, and cpu use. Read the directions it is not difficult to set up, but if you don't read how it can be confusing.

What exactly is wrong with his 5volt? I'm not following on that one???

alkaline
11-11-01, 04:03 PM
The problem with the 5 volt is that it is BELOW 5 volts..
(4.86) if anything it should be above 5 volts.. (5.04) or something. Having voltages right on spec, or a little above helps improve stability. If your lines are belowe spec like that, u might want to buy a new power supply.

Here are my lines with 320 watt power supply and 6 fans! :)

Well that kind of ticks me off..this power supply is only 2 months old!!! well if anything I could us it as a paper wieght..

Hmm..never new that! My PSU has a 12v of about 12.5 all the time but it's 5 volt sits around 4.89-4.96 never over! Well next pay check I'll have to see! I have an old 250 I could use to power just the mobo I guess! :) I know it's 5v was always over! never really paid much attention to that before!

Sofar though I've never had problems! Could it be my connection that's not together right? I'll have to make sure my power plug is in propperly as well.. hmmmm

I never bothered to set up MBM! I use CPUCool! It serves my needs! :)

But it is weird that our voltages are very close.

Hmmmmmm...:)

I have to disagree about there being a problem with the 5 volt line because hardware has a tolerance of atleast .25v in acceptable Voltage variances Below that threshold I would be worrying. Cheap PS can aggravate it You are fine in my opinion. 4.75v and above is acceptable in my own opinion below that you are in trouble.

Well a Enermax 330 watt PS is not a cheap PSU as far as I knew..but I may be wrong?

Hafta reinforce what Cube mentioned earlier- your temps are so high it seems a likely possibility that your heatsink just isn't communicating with the cpu. Arctic silver II will last you through many applications, so would be a good bet to try even with your current heatsink/fan. The original dragonorb is no great shakes, but ought to do better than what you're seeing..
be sure to clean your cpu and heatsink surface thoroughly, and make sure that it's mating up properly.
Antec cases cool extremely well, even with stock fans- if someone has a cooling problem in an Antec SX, I'd seriously question the idea that it might be a problem with the case- better to throw money at a new HS/F for the cpu first, than worry about the case fans.
IMHO.

Another thing, ConductEvil...

This doesn't really have anything to do with your CPU temps, but after you get your new Heatsink/Fan combo, and arctic silver it, etc... Just remember that if your Northbridge Chipset only has a small heatsink on it, you won't be able to Overclock the FSB as high as it can really go. So you might also look into getting a chipset cooler after you get more money to spend on your cooling.

That Program I was running is called "hmonitor" and it is the absolute SHIZNIT!, every overclocker should own it. its bad ace.

If u are wondering what I am refering to.. look at some of my previous posts to see the program im talking about.

I'd have to agree on the SK-6 and Delta. My temps never get above 50C under load on a hot day and my 1.4 is at 1.66GHz on 166 FSB with 1.92V through it.

Normally runs at 48C all the time. I've got the same case and a 300W as well. The 5V line shouldn't be that bad either. Mine hovers around 4.86V-4.92V all the time under load. Never a problem out of it.

Well the older Orbs sucked big time. However I got a Dragon Orb III free and tried it. Its better than my Globwin38
