well since this is an international website
sooo i wanna ask u guys one question
what is the connection speed in your local place
coz i find it different from countries
as in my country Malaysia
the faster connection is 56kpbs(usually connected at 49kpbs only)
to download an ammmpeeeetree will took me half an hour
how about u?

We're a bit spoiled in the US. While many folks are limited to 56k dial-up connections to the Web(which offer bandwidth that's between ~33kbps and ~53kbps) some people have the luxury of broadband connections via DSL or digital cable(usually along with cable TV service). Assuming that one can afford them! Bandwidth can be ~256 kbps to ~2 Mbps.

I have cable (road runner) and get between 2-3 Mbps down and 384 Kbps up.

oh i am lost, what is DSl, digital cable or road runner?
what i know is only fiber optic cable
they said by using fiber optic cable,
the connection speed increses a lot.
well my goverment claim that our country's
internet fees is cheaper (if not cheapest) in the world
but i am thinking, what that slow connection, does it worth it
because if the connection is slow means more time (time=$)
to transfer data thru the net, agree?
well in my place (Malaysia), the connection fees is *US$0.421 per hour. How about your place?
****RM 3.80=US 1.00***

DSL stands for digital sescriber line it moves data over plain old telephone line(POTS) to a DSLAM witch converts it to fiber optic cable to the internet. Cable(Road Runner and other companies) use coax cable to go from the house to the equipment that converts it to fiber optic cable back to the internet. I pay a flat fee of $39.99 per month.

39.99???
is that in US$ ?
if it is, it comes up to RM152 in my country
is the fees in your country is counted in terms of month instead of usage duration?

that currency is probably US
and i think it has unlimited usage

i m from hong kong and if you use boardband here you dont have to pay any fees for each hour...but if use 56k(phoneline) then it will cost $1.xx HKD(US....ummm.$0.1x) somewhere where

what is boardband? izzit somekind of LAN?
u said use boardband don't need to pay unless
uses modem from phoneline
probarly i am confused coz i believe all internet connection
uses phoneline, but pc might use it indirectly
by connecting it to a server (which is still connected to the phoneline)

Broad band is a faster connection that is always on very similar to having a direct network connection to the internet. I pay $39.99 USD amonth and it is unlimited usage. A 10baseT network card transfers at 10Mega bits per second (Mbps) my connection transfers at 2~3 Mega bits per sec(Mbps)

well DSL and Cable sound almost (almost still means not same) same to me.
Btw does all the connection fees US is payed monthly and with unlimited connection? Or it's just one of the connecting option?

they use different cables and such to transfer through.

basicly cable= the more ppl on the same provider as you the slower your speeds.

dsl= the farther you are from the provider the slower.

the service plans are pretty much always monthly and unlimited for cable and dsl.

there are yearly contracts and there mostly unlimited too.:)

Small addition: most DSL providers offer varied rate/speed plans: in other words, the more you spend the faster your internet connection.

Cable and basic DSL are similar in speed, etc, but actully connect differently-
Cable uses a cable modem to connect to a shared subnet-see #1 above
DSL uses a DSL modem to connect - dedicated bandwidth- see #2!

frankly speaking.....i don't understand
(honest right? i don't like to pretend understand coz i don't)
b4 these i can "feel" the meaning
but when mention about "cable modem" and "DSL modem", what's
the different? Or u mean that if u use DSL connection or cable
connection, the modems are different? Or it's the same modem
just connected to different sources?

Btw i i just wanna tell you guys that everytime i reply a post,
i will disconnect and take my time to reply
then only online again to post it. Not as luckly as u
who has "unlimited" connection. time=$

Here is a link about DSL http://www.dslmarketplace.com/

Both use modems, but they are not compatible, nor are they anything like 56k modems.

A lot of web connectivity such as dsl use POTS (phone line) basically what it does is send data at a higher frequency range down the copper wire so the it doesn't disturb the normal phone signals, this increases the speed greatly!!
