View Full Version : 7800GTX is BURNING hot!
I recently jumped on WC'ing and so far I can say I'm impressed. 21C Idle and 33C Load, what more could ya ask for? Well, not getting a burn on your finger from touching the PCB  While rummaging around my tower after getting my WC'ing setup I grazed my hand on the PCB of the card to see how hot it was, and it burnt me! The RAM was rather warm as well, areas around the RAM, the power regularters as well was pretty warm. With the lack of a CPU fan blowing down and hitting the card, I think this could be an issue. Is it safe to run the card with out any active air going across the card or not...? I have a 120mm positioned over it and its fine for now, I want to cut a whole in the side panel and mount a 120mm but just not to confident about cutting the acrylic.

my 7800GTX runs extremely hot as well. I fixed this by adding a 92mm fan strapped to the heatsink by rubber bands/zip ties. Take off the plastic cover so the fan directly hits the heastink. I found load temps to drop by 7-10 degrees. My card is now a lot cooler and i can even touch it without getting roasted.

I did this, maybe it'll help.. It was easy to do.. http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=432484
Errr....I guess I should explain this a little better. The back side, as well as the front side, is burning hot. With the card straight up, like this |, I have a fan over the top, like a T, blowing down on both sides. This seems to relieve some of the heat. I was just wondering why it gets so damn hot, seems a bit odd for the PCB its self to get so roasty.
I would carefully made a template out of carboard or bristol board, get it positiond, cut the hole, mount a nice 120mm fan blowing on your card: problem solved!

hi i added a fan to it http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=4387472#post4387472 it cooled it down a bit also i have a 120mm fan blowing out of the case next to the vido cards too
Ahh thanks, that helps. What kind of fan and how loud are they? I'd rather have a few of those going than a huge 120mm fan unless it was a side intake.

wouldn't a huge 120mm fan be quieter than anything smaller? assuming output was the same, I mean. a bigger fan spins less and pushes more. less spinning means less noising. Unless it's like a 100CFM fan..then the tornado of wind noise will be bad :)
