View Full Version : The Red Library DLV Project

I just created a team for us for The Red Library DLV Project. Here's what it does:

Red Library is Ready Response's search engine with a difference - every single link in the database is hand picked (at present 7000+ links) and categorized. It is a tremendous resource and used by many other sites/visitors worldwide, but as with all search engines there is always a possibility that a link in the database will become a broken a link (404).

The idea behind this project was to make a client application which downloads links from the Red Library server, validates them (i.e. checks to see if they are 404 or not) and then returns the results back to Red Library. The Red Library server will then double check all the links that come back reported as 404, and remove the links if they are found to be down over a period of 7 days or longer. Basically - the more people that run the client, the less bad links will be present in Red Library!

Here's the link to the site if anyone wants to read more about it:
http://www.readyresponse.org/index.php?item=distributed&opt=2

Here's the link to our stats:

*Edit: I see THF joined up! WTG man!

Looks interesting, I'll have to read up on it.

IMO, it's going to be pretty easy flying up the ranks in this. I have plenty of internet bandwidth so spare so I'm going to stick this thing on a few more of my compies. The top users today have done like just over 7k links and I have done about 150 in around 10 minutes so I really don't think it's going to be a problem overtaking other teams left and right.

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:02 PM
i have 3 clients up and running.... and with each at 'max' settings..... every 5 minutes check 10 links.....

yeah... i'm gellin

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:08 PM
I guess it'll show in a bit when the server updates how many links i've done.

sno.lcn
04-10-06, 01:13 PM
Ok, I just found out when trying to install on some older machines that you need .net installed, but it's not a problem, as I am installing it on those machines as we speak.
I was reading their faq section and as it turns out, I can run up to 3 instances at the same time on each computer!

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:18 PM
Yer KIDDING!?!?!?!

How do you do that?

sno.lcn
04-10-06, 01:19 PM
Nevermind, I was wrong. I thought it meant on each computer but it's only 3 clients per user. Sorry.

So would it be wrong for me to have several usernames so I could run more?

*Edit: Man, I feel like such an idiot. I guess I just got trigger happy when I saw the 3 client thing lol.

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:23 PM
I dunno man. I'm maxed out at 3. If you want, then make a new Username...

here is what they say on thier forums:

Hi,

We covered the main reason behind the cap in this thread: http://www.readyresponse.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1899

Basically there is no need for someone to be running 20 clients on one internet connection...because they would end up doing unnecessary work which would not be useful to the project.

We will obviously be aiming to detect people who sign up for multiple accounts in order to try and run more clients. We are well-aware that there always a way around the restrictions - and we hope that users respect the project and the reasons for the restrictions being in place.

Soon the client limits will be removed...but until then we will enforce it in every way we can Smile

Thanks.

Wang

So with that... I'd say just go with 3 clients.... and figure out another team to start from those bottom 3-4 clients on the DC list

sno.lcn
04-10-06, 01:26 PM
Thanks Frank, that cleared it up a bunch. I'll run my 3 clients from my house and try to get 3 more up on another connection accross town, since their main concern seems to be with 3 per connection rather that 3 per user.

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:26 PM
There is still Majestic-12 and MoneyBee left that we dont' have teams in. Maybe one of those could fill up your spare compies internet time?

sno.lcn
04-10-06, 01:28 PM
I was just thinking that exact same thing. At least I'll be getting my $$ worth out of this 8mb internet connection I'm paying out the butt for :p

Yah.. Start a Majestic-12 team. The MoneyBee is a CPU hitter.... it'd take away from the F@H/BOINC time that concerns the others.

I could install it on my mom's lappy but that is already folding and DIMEing, and that is already almost more than it can handle, so I think I'd better play it safe. :-/

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:44 PM
ok man. Too bad you can't vmware a windows install and do so on linux....

Redleg
04-10-06, 01:45 PM
You guys positive this doesn't take away any from folding? If so, I would like to help, even tho I fold with another team. I only have 1 machine.
Redleg

TollhouseFrank
04-10-06, 01:46 PM
it doesn't use your CPU power. That's how we got a bunch from our F@H and BOINC teams to join in netDIMES also.

Both use minimal resources, and only hit your internet bandwidth.

Redleg
04-10-06, 01:48 PM
Ok, so I dl the client, register it, and then on the team page, click the 'join this team' button?

sno.lcn
04-10-06, 01:50 PM
khiloa, if you want they have a majestic-12 linux install. I'm about to make a team for us.

TollhouseFrank

Yep.

Please dont' feel obligated to switch over to us from MaxPC. OR... you could try to do what we did here and expand your DC section to do more than F@H. We have SETI, BOINC, DIMES, Red-Library, and soon to be Majestic-12 Teams.

Redleg
04-10-06, 02:02 PM
Ok, thanks, but no worries, I'll still fold for them, but do the Red-Library here. :)

He is towards the top of most of our D/C projects! I need to steal a few of his computers! :sn:

Me? I'm using 3 PC's. A Socket A Sempron 2200+ OC'd from 166fsb to 200fsb. A Socket 754 Sempron 64 3000+, and a Socket 754 Athlon 64 3200+

On all 3 of my clients for Red Library, I set interval to 5 minutes (minimum interval) and Links to 10 (max links).

Beyond that, when it comes to the others, it is longevity, especially with F@H. I just joined BOINC on 3 projects, so it'll be awhile before those stats get up high.

Finally back up. Had a storm come thru here friday evening, was gone, and when the wife and I got back, all the clocks were flashing. Lost my MB and the nic card in the cable modem. It also fried our DVD/VCR combo player. Finally got it back from the shop this morning, and I'm finally 'turning pages' again.

No question asked is stupid, so they say, but this one has to be. Looking at the scores, you guys obviously have more than 1 computer running in RL, correct? Reason I wonder is I feel soooo left behind having only 1 computer, and you guys' points are so far ahead of mine. Guess that's not really a question as more of a fact, huh? :)

I think the way he did it was 3 instances in 3 different folders and maybe he renamed the .exe files with 1, 2, & 3 at the end. I could be wrong though, I can't find the post he made on how to do it.

Karbon
05-14-06, 03:23 PM
I asked the same question to rpkole

thats a easy one just copy the dir that RL is in then rename the exe
example red.exe rename to red1.exe or red2.exe and the dir jsut put a 1 or 2 on the end of that too

hope this helps

All you have to do is copy the redlib_dlv folder twice; I have redlib_dlv, redlib_dlv2, and redlib_dlv3. Then, go into each folder and add the corresponding number to RedLib-DLV.exe, ie RedLib-DLV2.exe, RedLib-DLV3.exe, and start up all 3

Hope that helps

It's really too bad how there isnt a way to run more than 3 clients per user. I guess we could all have multiple user names on our team, but that probably isn't encouraged by the project creaters.

06-28-06, 09:36 PM
That's why I decided not to put 1 instance on each rig on my house. First of all, not all of them are on 24/7...and like you said it's just hard to keep track of. /me wishes red library and netdimes would let us run more than 3 or 1 clients respectively.

Okay...so I was scrimming in cs and my fps dropped to 20. I looked at the task manager and red library was using 50% cpu...wtf? I stopped that one...30 seconds later both of the other ones shot up to 50%. Has that happened to anyone else?

per username. Like...you can only have 3 clients running under "ic3d" or whatever your username is.

edit: do you really have that many instances running? holy crap.

If you really wanted to you could just run the project under a few usernames on the same team, but the project developers wouldn't be too happy.

why not ? dont they want to get the job done fast ? it dosent make sense, look at MJ12, as fast as you can, this one is 10-30 every 5mins...

Karbon
07-05-06, 09:33 PM
IIRC a few reasons. For starters, their servers can't handle that much. That makes no sense for a number of reasons, but the other one does make sense. By having people from various ISPs, countries, etc it makes the data more significant - they can see trends in whether some urls dont work and stuff.

Redleg
07-23-06, 08:31 AM
Just noticed over in RL forum that Wang has lifted the restriction on how many clients can be run. You can now have more than 3 listed. I was wondering about that when I was browsing thru some of the other teams' scores, and saw 1 guy already has over 133k links validated today (and I'm chugging along with only 5200), and it's only going on 0930 Eastern. I'm slowly catching up to ya karbon. :)

Karbon

Wow, I read the forums a few weeks ago and they were trying to cut down on people getting more points. They encouraged people to upgrade to the new client that only allows X points per day.

This is a good step for the project, but may be harmful to our team. I'm sure there are teams that only do this project and are willing to run dozens of clients, whereas a large portion of our RL team (myself included) try to do several DC projects at the same time.

Unfortunately I hate having to decide which projects to run. I wish they would hurry up on the linux client.

TollhouseFrank
07-23-06, 01:13 PM
hmm... sometimes, you just have to spread yourself 'thin' to do the greatest good. Do a whole bunch of different projects, and help out OCForums as a whole! If you can, try to get a different project on each machine you have.

I just put 8 of these on my htpc, it's also runing netDIMES and mj-12 and a boinc project or two. I never knew that each client used the same config so I don't have to put in my name and password every time, that's sweet! I guess I'll keep putting more and more of these things on until it cripples the rig or my router(whichever comes first).

Karbon
07-25-06, 09:54 PM

Yeah. Each client only uses 20mb ram and no cpu so it's not that bad. Euler uses 5mb ram for each client and majestic 12 doesnt use that much either, so I have plenty of ram to spare.

I'm confused. http://www.readyresponse.org/index.php?item=distributed&opt=9 the official stats show that we have 2,345,057 points, but free-dc says we have 3,634,518.

All the teams have more links on free-dc, but I have more links (just me) on readyresponse than free-dc.

What's going on?

As far as individual stats go, it appears free-dc is 1 update behind.

As far as total links, free-dc is accurate when using the individual stats provided on their site. Total links on ready response is just completely wrong, the total using their numbers should be 3,660,818

80 clients!?!?! I wonder how many this guy (http://stats.free-dc.org/new/userstats.php?proj=red&name=DarkStar) has?

Does having all of those clients slow your internet down? If not, I may add a few more. :)

also for installing there are these two which will allow you to install hundreds per computer in a matter of seconds.

I guess that would explain the extreme pointage some of these teams are putting up. Ars Technica posted over 4 million links so far today, thats more than our total production! :(

I really can't get this to work on my laptop. Is anyone trying it on windows 2000? At first it couldn't find a dll, now a "fatal error" occurs and it says that it needs .net framework to tell me the error.

does red library need .net?

right...so apparantly there's a bug now where if you have more than 10 clients running, you get 0 credit. If you have more than 10 running, try stopping them all and only starting up 10.

About the 10 client limit thing, do they track that per username or ip? Could I make another username and run another 10 from my house?

Karbon
08-23-06, 10:01 AM
I'm almost positive it is by username. If you wanted to, you could make another name and run clients under it to get my points for the team.

I really can't get red library working- the clients say that they are validating the links but every day I get 0 for points. I'm talking to Wang from the RL project so hopefully he can help me out. I think it has something to do with win 2k not working right.

After Red Library put the 10 client limit, i had to uninstall and delete everything. Then i reinstalled 10 clients, but only 9 work for me as well.

It was kind of a pain b/c it took some time to label all of them only to delete them shortly after. Oh well, i had 50-something clients running for like a day and a half, then they cut it off. Blah.

sno.lcn
08-25-06, 06:41 AM
But I would have to run each username on a different compy right? Because when installing multiple clients I only have to configure the first one, each one I add after that is already configured the same as the first.

Won't swear to it, until someone else says something, but I've run into another problem. Did a reboot, and when everything loaded I opened the first client, and got this:

[2:01 AM] Sorry - you are running too many clients on this project
[2:01 AM] The maximum number of clients you can run is 3
[2:01 AM] Client stopped

I thought the limit was 10 clients. I looked over on their forum, and didn't find anything stating they were going back to limiting you to 3 clients. This is with ver 1.9, by the way.
