I don't know much about the Celerons, but I heard quite a bit about the Celeron 533a (if my memory serves me correctly) they are very good overclockers. But i think your 500 isn't.. If you want to overclock a little bit, get the Abit BE6-2 rev.2 , you'll get very good memory throughput performance and it has SoftMenuIII that enables you to tune it up very well. If you're going to overclock like monster, then change the whole system. your processor and the mobo. such as T-Celery 1200 (12x multiplier)

Going go out on a limb here but I must say after years of Intel usage if I was going build a new system from the ground up I would go with AMD.
OK now that that's out of the way if you going stay with socket 370 and need a new mobo there alot out there that will fill the bill you will want one with flaxable as far as FSB and volt twinking gose.
The one I like is the Iwill IWLBD133U very easy to setup and very smooth working, FSB from 66 to 150 also it supports the newer Tualatin CPU a real plus if you going to go to the 1.1 Celeron later on. The down side to this is it only supports 512 megs of main memory. There alot of other out that are as good or better just take you time and read up on them.
The 500 Celeron don't take kindly to OC but the 533 dose.I would go with the 1ghz Celeron (Mine is running rock soild at 1.2 with defalt volts) or the 1.1. :)

The Celeron I maxes out at 533mhz. The Celeron II starts at 533mhz and goes forward from there. If you go to the front page of the mother site you will find a link to the CPU database and the experience of members with the various versions of celeron will be apparent. You did not mention the type of motherboard currently in your system so I can't help you there. If you want to upgrade and stay with celeron I would suggest the Asus TUSL2-C due to it's stability and overclockability and the Celeron 1.2 because of it's 100mhz+ bus. This might cause the need to upgrade other components also so thorough research is a must. You've made the first steps. Hope this helps. My nickle.

For a not so costy budget I would recommend:

Asus TUSL2
1.2 Tualatin
Full Tower
Heatsink and Fan
Case Fans
