Ok, I've bin running Seti for about a month now as a memeber of the overclockers team. I borrowed a Volcano6 from a friend of mine this week and overclocked my system a little. now generally it looks and feels faster....but I have one little problem. Seti at home went from 6:12 hours to compleat to over 10 hours to compleat a module when I went from my default 1.4 to the 1.6 I clocked it up too. What is happening?

I can play UT for hours no problems, and do all the rest of my stuff like normal but Seti is slowing down. I'm using the 3.03 screensaver client btw.

Any ideas would be greatly apreciated. I was thinking maybe my HD's are not capable of the higher speed and causing errors? Or could it be my ram?

I'm running the machine below in sig with 384MB PC133 at 3,2,2,6 for stepping, a g-force256 (creative), and a quantum fireball 10G HD. A soundblaster live x-gamer 5.1, a sony CRX-100E CDRW and a Sony CDU701 CD-R

And my CPU temp under full load is actually sitting at <49 now. I added another exaust fan today!

Check your desktop properties under the screen saver tab and select the setting button and make sure that the box is checked for it to goto blackscreen. Or just go here (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/Instr1.htm) and find out how to set up the command line client. Also make sure your harddriver is not set to shut down in your power management.

You could also try getting the CLC...that should improve your times, too. :)

What is the AR of the WU? Lower AR's (<.100) will produce higher calc times.

A 1.4@1.6 using the CLC version should be getting you about 4.5hrs maximum on ave AR's (.4xx).

CLC is the comandline client correct?

I have not had the time to look into it! maybe I should!

Now if I have seti running and not actually loading it as the screen saver would that cause the times to increase?
Ie. run it but not set it as the default screensaver so it coms on! I was thinking about it and I had forgot to load it back up in my screensaver properties. just ran it from the start menu? would that make a difference?

how is the CLC for running in the backgroud? The only time I shut the screen saver version off is when I'm playing games or working on a graphics project. Otherwise it's in my taskbar chugging away!

If you really want to stick with the Screensaver version of SETI send a private message to JigPu. He seems to know how to tweak it. He claims that a tweaked SS will run almost like the CLC.

Also, you need to defrag your HD. I depends on how much instal-unistal you do, but try to do it every 6 months or so. Remember to put the Swap file in the front of your HD.

Ok, I've converted! ou guys forced it on me! :D

Now I have a few more questions! I saw a page a few days ago with info on getting SetiSpy and Seti Driver all running in harmony! Anyone have that page? I was looking at both programs and they both have great features.

Thanks guys!

Follow my link in my last post, you can set up a gui to monitor the clc and when you game just shut it down.

For my own (and insane) pleassure here it is:

Note: the following assumes you have the latest download of SETI@home, SETISpy & SETI Driver ready at hand...

01.) If you have previous SETI versions, uninstall ALL SETI programs

02.) Create a "SETI" folder
03.) In the SETI folder, copy "setiathome-3_03_i386-winnt-cmdline.exe" & "SETI Driver.exe" & "SetiSpy.exe"

04.) Click on "SETI Driver.exe"
05.) Set "maximum processes" to "1"
06.) Set "desired cache size" to "1"
07.) Make sure the "hide processing box" is checked (default value).
08.) Set "SETI client priority" to "normal" (default is "low")
09.) "Process monitoring" is at the bottom of the window, make sure the "use SETI Driver" is checked.
10.) Click on the "save config" button
11.) Click on the "transmit" button (if you get an error window at this point, choose "ignore")

12.) A DOS window (the CLC or command line client) will open entitled "SETI 1 - Transmit"
13.) In the DOS window, enter "1" or "2" (depending on your status)
14.) Enter the email address you registered for SETI with

15.) The CLC will download data, display information on the WU downloaded, then stop when it reaches "beginning analysis"
16.) Then CLC should disappear as SETI Driver "hides" the processing

NOTE: You should have a blue radio telescope icon running in the system tray (next to time & volume in the lower right portion of your screen). If this is the case, SETI Driver & the CLC are working together... CONGRATS!!!

17.) Right click on the blue radio telescope icon, and select "exit"
18.) In your SETI folder, click on "SetiSpy.exe"
19.) Select "I agree" (if you do, of course)
20.) Click "ignore" (if you get the "error window")

NOTE: You should now be looking at the SETI Spy interface (GUI window). In the white-ish area on the left are what I will call "tabs" (named, "progress," performance," results," etc.). To select a tab, click on it.

21.) Select the "client" tab
22.) Click on the "configure" button, this will open the "client configuration" window
23.) Click on "browse", this will open the "select SETI@home Client" window
24.) Click on the "SETI Driver.exe"
25.) At the bottom of the window it should read [file name: SETI Driver.exe] [file type: executables]
26.) Click on "open"
27.) The "select SETI@home Client" will close, and the "Client Configuration" should be displayed

NOTE: Assuming I have set this up on a "C:" drive, using the "SETI" folder name as I mentioned above, the client configuration window will read "C:\SETI\SETI Driver.exe" in the "client path" area.

28.) In the "client parameter(s)" area type "-SETISpy" (don't miss the hyphen)
29.) Under "client control" at the bottom of the window, check all 4 boxes
30.) Click "OK" and you will be back at the SETI Spy GUI
31.) Select the "Setup" tab (should default to the "display" button setting, if not select "display")
32.) check the 3 left boxes in this order: "minimize to tray," "run in tray," "close to tray"
33.) Click on the "client" button
34.) Check the "Ignore presence of state file on startup" box
35.) In the system tray, right click on the SETI Spy icon (radio telescope with magnifying glass) and select "exit".

NOTE: At this point, there should be no SETI icons in the system tray, or other SETI windows open. If anything is open, close it.

36.) Click on "SetiSpy.exe" in the SETI folder, if you get an error message (which you probably will) select "ignore".
37.) You should have both the SETISpy AND SETI Driver icons now running in your system tray.

38.) Left click on the SETI Driver icon, make sure the "use SETI Spy" box is checked in the "process monitoring" section at the bottom of the window.
39.) Click on the "save config" button, then minimize the SETI Driver window.

40.) Left Click on the SETI Spy icon in your system tray.
41.) Select "exit".

42.) Next, click on the "SETI Spy.exe" icon in your SETI folder... No errors? GREAT.... CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You are now configured to run the CLC, Spy & Driver off the SETI Spy icon...

43.) To get the full functionality of SetiSpy you must do this workaround, it will enable you to update your user info and give you a direct link to our SETI@home team page.

44.) Finally double click the SETI driver icon in your tray, set the desired cache size to 3-5 days worth of work units. If you are not sure how many to set it to set it to 2 and see about how many units you complete in a day and then multiply that by 3 or 5. Save the configuration and you are now ready to crunch.

Of course, you can make a shortcut to SETISpy and paste it into your system startup folder, then SETI@home will automatically restart, every time you boot up Windows...

Happy Crunching!!!

Kris

Sorry.....I didn't resist it :)

Perhaps JigPu can do an article that we can add to the instruction list. The screensaver version still seems quite popular.

Thanks guys for helping me with this! I"m all set up and running wild! I'll have to wait till I get home from work before I can check to make sure it's all perfect. But it looks good sofar! :)

That is because it is so sexy looking! I love the why it crunches...could deal without the amount it takes to crunch!

Personally I like the features of SETISpy better then the screensaver version of seti. I like being able to see were my workunit is, and the graph in the screen saver doesn't really tell you that much.

I also like the fact that SS can show you what was found in your work unit!

Not sure but I think this CLC is here to stay on my machine! :)

There has to be a better way to draw the graphics.... I mean, a game can throw out 50fps, and suck up CPU time. But the GUI only needs about 1fps for most stuff, and 4fps for the fast ones. What slow routine do they use?! It shouldn't eat CPU time like it does... Not at 4 fps!!

As for the article writing thing.... I might just do that. No garuntees yet, but if I find the time, I might write up a list of things to do to get that GUI Goin'!

That would be sweet....I've been too lazy to set up the clc so far. I should do something now that I've got:

1. my system (see below)
2. Tbird 1400@1530
3. P.O.S. Gateway celeron 333@stock
4. good ol' pentium 233mmx laptop!!!

Gotta get the comps at work running! Have 4 dual 1ghz P3 xeon servers and about 60 P3-550 workstations...oh yeah...they'll never miss the FLOPS...
