My friend just bought a new computer (dont laugh)
It is a cheap TigersDirect comp he got for $300. I had to help them pick out the best computer they could get for REALLY cheap. The add didnt mention what power supply it had, i was kind of shocked.

I had to put it all together, all the parts came in their own handy static-free wrappers. I kindof laughed when the cheap instructions that came with the computer never said to apply the thermal paste that came with it. My friend's dad didnt want me to put it on at first, but i reassured him it was an important thing to put on. This is a Duron, after all...

150 Watt PS (i almost crapped my pants when i read the 150 watt sticker)
800 Mhz Duron
8mb AGP Graphics (haha)
128 pc100 SDRAM
52x CD-ROM (which sux and pauses, i am gonna help him get his old CD-ROM in there, also his old 8/12/30x CD burner)
I am unsure of the motherboard, there was a manual, but i didnt really look at it, but I looked in the BIOS and i can change the FSB up to 113, but there were jumpers on the mobo, and i bet it is possible to change the duron to 6*133 somewhere.

His temps are 39 at full load for an hour. He has no case ventilation at all, so his case temp was 32.

Would it be smart to go 6*133, see if the memory/graphics card/modem can take it, then take it to 7*133 if the chip allows and the temps are safe.

what is a safe temp for a DURON? People always talk about safe temperatures for Athlons, and they usually say -50. My Asus A7A must have a whacked thermal sensor, because I get 70 at full load and it never locks up or anything. Completely stable.

The A7A reads temps at aprox. 10 degrees higher than other mb's. My A7V266 has the same problem. when I switched my board, my temps read 10 degrees higher. I think Asus does this as a safety precaution. The Kill Temp of an Athlon is 95 degrees and Durons are in the same ball park. Your temperatures are safe untill you experience lockups. Mind you I freak when I get above 55 degrees.
