Does anybody know of a service that does free domain registration? I don't want anything like DynDNS, and I already have a hosting provider. I just want a domain to link it to.
Nope. it is not that expensive though. try www.godaddy.com

what you want is not possible. really truly not possible: a registrar always wants some money for a 2nd level domain.

I use namealerts.com. Its 10 dollars a year and they accept paypal. I own my own hosting server with apache and mysql, so its well worth it. You could always use no-ip.com or anyother subdomain redirects.
Most free domain registrations are usually part of a package deal with hosting. I wouldn't hunt long for good deal, as registration should be cheap no matter where you go. I pay $6/year for my domain names with 1&1.
