i got a tbird 1.4GHz and i wanted to get 1.5GHz so i went into the bios and changed the system clock to 143 mhz and left the multiplier at 10.5, well my system locked down and wouldnt even boot, i got lucky and waited 5 mins then tried to boot back up and it came back... (whew) so i set it back to where it was (133x10.5) any clues why it did this?
Heat or weak psu or poor quality ram
Post some more of your system specs like your CPU stepping , mobo , hsf , psu , ram , case , case cooling and post your temps @ default (1.4) while loading your cpu.

I guess its the ram that is holding u back. Why not up the multipilere a bit instead?? like 11.5 or something like that, and then up the fsb if you get it stable at 11.5x. Also you might need too up the vcore voltage too 1.85v
It is also a good idea to go in small increments!

i was going in smalll increments i got to 138 before i stepped it up to 143
and i cant change my multiplier for some reason the bios wont let me.
my vcore is 1.84 (but the bios says its 1.75)
my specs are:
ASUS A7A266
ThermalRight SK-6
Y.S. Tech 40 cfm fan
512 megs of ram (dont know the brand)
Geforce 3
thats them. hope that helps!

also my heat...
its a problem however asus says it isnt, let me start off by posting what asus told me when i went to them about my heat problem:
The temp issue is not caused by our motherboard, this should be the AMD processor, Please refer to the
following link with regard to the AMD thermal information. Under page 4 of the document it says that the
maximum die temperature is 95 degree celcius for 1100MHz and higher. http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/23794.pdf.
The thermal resistor used for monitoring, is placed at different locations on both motherboards. It is closer to the
CPU on A7A266, thus registering a higher temperature. The temperature is actually more accurate with the
A7A266.
The BIOS version may affect the accuracy of the readings. 1004 for A7A266 is most accurate. at first, our early bios also report the temp is only 3X~40c, but this isn't the real reflection from the cpu temp, so
from the 1005 bios, the temp report is tuned according to actual temperature. though it seems too high as
6X~7X, but it is the real temp of cpu, and the user can do something if the cpu is overheat as fast as possible.
It should be more safety.
For further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
i updated my bios and now it runs at 53 (as opposed to 59) at idle and me doing very little work and around 56 at a lod (playing DoD)
when i was moving up in the increments i would check the temps and they never got over 52-53C thats why i went for 1.5ghz. so i dont think it was the heat.

I had no problem o/c'ing mine by increasing the multiplier to 11.5.
But on my other board I can't increase the multiplier, either. Bummer.

Just be sure the mobo is rated to handle a faster processor than the one you get. I think that was my mistake.
It could very well be your ram then what do you have 1 512 meg stick or 2 256 meg sticks? Whats the ram rated PC1600 , 2100 , 2400 , CAS 2 , 2.5 or 3. Have you changed your memory timing so its more aggesive or is it at default? Check to see what kind of ram you have you may want to upgrade to some high quality ram if your using value ram or something else thats cheap. Also try to find when the system will become unstable you know its somewhere between 138 and 143.

hrmmmm lemme check....
*looks at mobo box*
AMD Athlon/Duron 550~1.2ghz+
is what it says on the back

its pc2100, ill look for a brand, and i dont know jack about oc'ing so changing ram stuff is way outta my league, i just know up the multiplier and the sysclock and u go faster.
*edited in*
i have 2, 256 meg sticks
Alright take one stick out then see how high you can overclock your fsb. Also try with one then the other , one stick can be better and alow a higher fsb.

now that i think about it, she pulled the ram out of some plastic *carton* type thing, so i think it is crappy ram, i am gonna go out and buy 1 512 stick, what is a really good brand? and where can i get it (all the pc stores around here suck)

First try what I posted before you may get a better overclock with one of those cheap sticks instead of both.
Crucial , Mushkin , Consiar there are others but I just dont have any experience with different ram so ...
Right now I am using one 256 meg stick of PC2100 crucial ram I got it dirrect from the manufacturer for like 37 bucks with free 2 day shipping. I am running at 150 fsb and I can run stable at 153 keep in mind this is with pretty agressive memory timing so at default I could probably go even higher.

Idle Limit - 8
TRC Timing Value - 6
TRP Timing Value - 2
TRAS Timing Value - 2
CAS Latency - 2
TRCD Timing Value - 2
This is actually a benchy at 149fsb with my 1.2@1.41 (149x9.5)
