View Full Version : Using one PCI and one AGP video card on the same PC?

Would be possible to run from Windows 2000 (what about XP?) two video cards in the same computer, one PCI (for crisp 2D such as Matrox cards do) the other AGP (for 3D gaming performance)?

I have an Asus P3B-F MB that has a BIOS option to select the startup video card from the AGP or PCI bus.

Would this work?

Would this require to reboot between switching between the two video cards or does Windows 2000 and/or XP support changing the active video card at run-time (or even to use them both with two monitors?)

Thanks

Multi-monitor support exists in Win2k and I'll assume XP too. How well it's implemented is another thing=)

In SP1 two vid cards crashed all the time in my system. Also resolution and refresh rate had to be set the same for both monitors(which sucked if u had a 15 and a 21") Supposibly MS fixed that in SP2 but I never got to try it out. I took out the PCI card and sold it long ago. Voodoo4 and AIW Radeon couldn't coexist.

When it's there you're going to have to set which videocard you want to be your main. This one will be running all your 3d gaming and whatnot. The secondary vid card will just be for the 2nd monitor. You can have extended display or clone display. Extended would just be an extended desktop onto another monitor. Clone would be..uhh, everything you do it repeats on the 2nd. Good for presentations I reckon.

There are more types of displays, TV-out, Magnified section of the screen(sorry, I forget the official names=) But I'm not sure if those are limited to matrox cards or not. I didn't play with it much honestly. I did extended desktop and was happy with that~

Pheasably you could, but you'd have to go behind your computer and switch the monitor cable between cards. Either that, or buy a KVM module only for the V part.

now, can you have one moniter running say counter-strike, and the other moniter doin aim and some other normal stuff? all at same time? or is that a big drain on cpu?

yes- all of the above
you can run games and apps at the same time, on separate monitors, and yes it is a big CPU drain.
