howdy all, just joined up last week and I recently just finished my first workunit (400 pointer) WOOT...

being the apparent noob that I am I have a few questions...

The first of which is EMIII which is opening up in a very tiny window which I can't see anything... Is there any way to make the window larger so I can see what is going on? I haven't gotten much of a chance to play around with it much but I haven't found a way to resize the window...

the next question I have is there any way to download more than one workunit at a time? I only have internet while at school. The workunit I just finished on saturday but did not have net access till today to get new work, in essence I wasted an entire 2 day's worth of crunching time not able to fold...

third question... has anybody noticed any benefits of running from a ram drive? I have a nice 512MB ramdrive that i've been thinking about moving folding to...

I wish EMIII's window was resizable too! But I don't think it is.

There is 1 supported way of getting up to 10 timeless tinkers downloaded for situations like yours. However, timleess tinkers are not necessarily the best point producers.

There is an unsupported way to do what you want, but it has a few steps you need to follow and understand. Basically, it is referred to as sneaker netting. I have done it a bit. You will also find some threads on the topic here.

How do you have folding setup? the graphical client or a service (like with wedo's 1 click) or a desktop non-graphical console? Instructions will vary a bit depending on how you are running.

There was a thread not that long ago about folding to a ramdrive. All-in-all my recollection is that there are very few if any performance advantages.

But one of our sneakernetter's (Warrior II) uses a thumb drive to fold with ... just not for performance reasons ... instead to fold on a rig while at work that can't access stanford.

On your second question, you can tell it to get work in "batches to minimize networking" or you can dl the WU, move it, dl another, and so on(from what I undertand). I haven't run it from a flash drive, but I'm pretty sure several people here have.

I currently am running the graphical client (the one that you can minimize to the tray) but I am willing to try any version that will get me what I want. so which ever way is easiest to explain for you would work... so what's the unsupported way?

Go with the 5.04 "beta" console version.

This is the quickest to find how-to on sneakernetting:
I copied the F@H folder for each machine to the thumb drive and exported the userID as a .reg file, also had shortcuts setup to run the F@H clients with -local. Also keep a copy of your "WU turn in machine" 's userID.

So to turn in a WU, just run the reg file, run the short cut and let it turn in the WU and grab the new one. Then close the client. Set the userID back and bring the F@H folder back to that netless machine.

Hope that makes sence.

Same principle, you can copy the WUs to either a flash drive or you hard drive, whatever you want it it's only going on one rig.

Indeed, most of us prefer the console version because it usually works better and possibly even a bit quicker. (I think.)

Some say it is, some say it isn't but if you think about it, doesn't it use a few cpu cycles to draw the protein? Plus the 5.04 doesn't crash all the time like you will find the graphical one to do(if not already, it will eventually happen).

the console version is badass, especially when run as a service. i haven't had issues with the graphical client on my P3 dells but it has been bitchy on my overclocked computers...go figure huh, but the console runs smooth as silk.
