View Full Version : LAN Party
I'm currently working on setting up a moderate size LAN party in my area. I've had a few small ones (no more than 8 people) and am now aiming towards the 10-20 range. Just thought I send out an invite to anyone in my area.
E-mail me if you're interested. We really need a server and some more hubs if possible, although I am working on getting a 36port one.

Looks like the LAN idea is a go. I've done some scouting around and there's a room for rent at my local mall. Before I commit any cash to this venture I'd like to know if/how many people are interested in attending. I'm looking at a Counterstrik/UT deathmatch tournament lasting around 12hours (possible extending into a 2-day event, we're limited by mall hours :( ).
Anyway please post here if you're interested in attending.
I'm thinking something like a 10-20$ entry fee that'll go towards prizes and renting the room.
Feedback is (as always) appreciated...but keep it constructive please this is my first atempt at such a venture.

Sorry I'm not in the area, but I have some ideas for you to consider:
Try any local chruch for a place to hold your party. They often have conference rooms for a very low cost. Also, check out the firehouse near you. They often have largeish rooms for cheap or free.
Wherever you end up, make sure you have access to the circuit breakers so that if you accidentally throw one, you can reset it with a minimum hassle.
Hope it goes well!
Thanks for the advice.
Anyone have any other ideas for affordable places to hold one?
War stories would be appreciate as well, I learn well form other people's mistakes :)
I may just be blind, but please describe "your area" to me. Thanks!
Kid
Sorry, it's in my information on the left hand side of the screen.
But my area is:
Auburn Alabama 36830
It's about 30-45minutes from Montgomer
30 minutes from Columbus Georgia
and about 1 hour from Atlanta Georgia.

Definately you want access to the circuit breakers, because I think almost every LAN I've been to has tripped at least one.
We rent out the local rec center rooms for cheap.

heh heh...
I noticed that shortly after asking. :) Thanks! nowhere close, but I had to check.
Sorry to interupt but what exactly is a LAN party? Do you just rent an empty room and everyone brings their own computer there and they all connect their computers somehow, or are there already computers there when you rent the room? And do you play against each other or against other people on the internet? Again, sorry for the newbie questions.
I imagine different people do them differently. The ones that I've been running started in my parent's basement (I don't live there but it's huge :) ). Anyway about 4-6 of me and my friends haul our computers there ever 2 weeks and network them and play our favorite games. I've got about 16 people now and we're bursting at the seams for space now, so the idea I'm entertaining is to rent some space/tables/chairs charge a small registration fee 10-20$ and hold a tournament using the registration fee to pay for the room and for prizes. I don't wanna make any money doing this, I'd just like to see this sorta thing catch on in my area.
Here's something that might be of use to you. I did some searching on the internet and found this:

I'm not in your area but I would come if I could. I, however, am into lan parties, I've been doing it for 5 yrs and love it. I'm having one this weekend and so far i have 12 people coming. Anyone in or near Fort Wayne, IN is invited, just mail me at supergenius74@hotmail.com and let me know. Good luck with your lan party I'm sure it will be fun. I have a house with a full finished basement and room for 20 or so people and usually have one every couple months. we always have problems getting hubs and switches and cables long enough to reach so i know what you are going thru, also as your lan gets bigger you need more power, the average lan gamer uses between 10-15 amps and you have to make sure your power source can handle that, I had one once that was 17 people, 17x10=170 amps, my house has a 200 amp service so we were fine till someone decieded to turn on the entertainment system! have a good one.
yeah I'm fortunate enough that one of my friends is a system admin for a local company and he can get us loner cable...still have problem with hubs and switches though. Other good thing is the basement at my place is on a different breaker box than the rest of the house so I don't have to make my parents turn off all of their stuff :). Godd luck with you party Supergenius74.
