I just bought a IBM R40 with a 1.3 Pentium M Proc,(130nm Banias core,skt479, 400MHz FSB, 1m cache) on a Intel 855 chipset and was looking to upgrade the processor. I checked Newegg, ZipZoom fly and even eBay but cant find any banias skt 479 processors that would fit I'm my lappy. I'm not to sure if i can drop in a skt 479 dolthan with 2M cache, would anyone know? Basically what procs can I put into my lappy? Does the Intel 855 chipset support the dolthan or even newer 90nm procs? It doesn't look like I can pin mod so that's ruled out. Please help.

I think they made up to 1.7 in the older 1meg cores. Check ebay. Best bet, but why do you need a faster chip? the 1.3GHZ in my old CL50 was great for aything but games(Duh) or encoding huge DVD or video files.

The 855 does support Dothans, but you have to make sure is isn't a BGA socket Dothan, and that it is a 400Mhz FSB one.

Thanks for the fond Funnyperson, you definately answered alot of my questions but now the question is where th hell can I get me a pga479 dolthan? Ohh and the majority of the crap I do is burning and encoding so a cpu boost would help.

actually more than likely your processor is a 478 pin...

1. FIND THE sSPEC alphanumeric number, which is 5 digits long on your current processor it should be a code etched into the green packaging below the core.
2. Open up this Intel spec sheet... http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/list.asp
3. Look down the left column of sSPEC#'s to find your processor
4. Once you found it look all the way to the right of the sheet to find out how many pins it has.
5. Decide on a speed that you want to get, and remember you want A 400mhz processor with 2mb l2 cache.
6. Find the processor with the speed you want that has the same number of pins as your current processor.
7. Write down that sSPEC #
8. Shop for Pentium-m's that only have the sSPEC # that you wrote down

simple as that...

also the very first i855 motherboards did not support dothan processors... if this laptop was made within the first 6 months of bianas release, you should check with your laptop manufacturer to make sure that you can eigther put in a processor faster than 1.8ghz or put in a processor with 2megs l2 cache... because bianas only went up to 1.8ghz and only have 1meg l2 if your laptop is listed as supporting eigther of thees then it's dothan compatable.
