My friend is building a new system and is wondering if he should get a athlon 950 or a duron 1 gig. He's gonn ado a small oc on it either ways so which one will give better proformance?

The 950 athlon will outperform the 1000 duron, especially if it's a 266 fsb athlon.

Neither, get an Athlon 1.0 gig. They are usually the same price as the 1.0 gig Duron.

Well, me personally, I would go with the Duron 1ghz, because the Duron 1ghz is based on the new Morgan Core with SSE enhancements. your equivelantly clocked Athlon will still be a little faster than this processor though.. but with overclocking it could be a nice little chip, although u could overclock the athlon just as much and it would still be a little faster.. but all in all i would get the duron 1ghz just because of its new core technology.

Hmmm.... what to say, Hello to the forums i guess. Being this thread is about me i should probably elaborate a bit on what is going on. The mobo I bought is an older one and has a 200 Mhz fsb. It will support chips up to 1.1 Ghz. I've been wanting to oc a processor for quite some time now and this oppurtunity seemed to be the a perfect chance for me to try it out. Idealy I will oc the chip to the 1.1 limit (that is as far as it will go wont it) and I want to know if the Duron with it's Morgan core or the T-bird with the larger cache would give me a better performance at the same speeds. Thanks for your help and please correct me if im wrong in any of my thinkings in this post (I'm still a newbie i guess)
:)

Truthfully I've had an account since the forums were switched over... I'm just lazy and haven't gotten around to it till now :)

Your Athlon would still be a little faster but not by much than the Morgan Core Duron.. the athlon has more cache.. I think there are some benchmarks at www.anandtech.com just look in their processors section.

For durability, you can't beat a Duron (actually you can!). I've seen several posts from people with Duron cores with all 4 corners chipped off that still worked fine. That and the Morgan core would seem to me a distinct advantage over the Athlon. If you do go for the Athlon you might want to get a slow Duron as a backup.

personally id go w/ the athlon. the extra cache will make more of a difference i think than the features in the 1gig duron. too bad they didnt up the cache on that puppy!

check out tom's review, and the athlon is still better. you have to use programs that use the sse instruction set for it to really make a difference.
