I was perfectly happy with my PII 350. My wife needed a new pc, retired the P90. I thought what a perfect time to get myself a new pc and pass on my old one to her. It took me almost a month to decide on the parts for my new pc and another two weeks of searching the net for pricing and mind changing about parts... All said and done, I fired it up and installed hardware monitoring (never seen this before.) I looked at my CPU temp and say it at 51c when the alarm was set for 50c!?!? I decided to look to see what a normal temp was for one of the chips and found this web site. I read a little about over clocking and now I'm stuck. I will now forever be a CPU hotrodder. As if I didn't already have enough to spend my pay check on.
That said, what can I do? :p
KG7-R
XP - 1700 (retail, bad mistake?)
340 watt power supply
Asus 8200 deluxe
512 MB RAM
IBM 60GB 7200RPM
I just picked up a 3 1/8 exhaust for the back and an expansion slot fan. I'll be installing these after I post this.
What should I expect for temps before overclocking?
Thanks to all of you, I think...
Just in case you haven't seen this site it has so much info on the KG7: http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/kg7kr7faq.htm
Welcome to the forums and the world of overclocking.

Since it's retail, I'm going to guess you're using the retail heatsink. If you are, don't plan on overclocking very much, or at all for that matter. You'll need to upgrade it before you should try to. If the temperature really is 51°C, don't even consider it. You can, but I highly recommend that you don't. Check out the Beginner Guides on the Front Page for more information
you should really get a new heatsink if the above assumptions are correct ... i recommmend the Glaciator II

Try reseating the HSF. I had to do that 3 times b4 I got it right. Also, What thermal compound are you using?

Thanks for the replies. I added one fan in back and tied up the ribbon cables pulling them out of the way. I'm now running at 41c, a huge improvement. The expansion slot blower I bought is toast. I plugged it in and get nothing. I tried multiple power cables and it didn't help. So much for quality control on Antec Cyclone Blowers. I will most likely get a different CPU cooler before getting to deep into overclocking.
I'd recommend the Alpha PAL 8045. There are a whole list of the cream of the crop, as it were, on the front page.

Go with the new MCX462 Swiftech with the 80x38 80C.F.M. Delta fan. You can take a look at www.sidewindercomputers.com

ditto (as you can see)
Expansion slot fans are useless IMHO. Dump 'em. Get a GlobalWin FOP38, and replace the 60MM Delta fan with an 80MM Sunon. Much quiter, and you get the same results. I have a Duron 800, and I've never seen it go above 39*C.

yea but your running a Duron 800 this guy will be using a XP 1700. Wouldn't he need a big and better fan then a Globalwin FOP 38. And some slot fans are better then others the one I'm using pushes out a lot of heat and I have been using it for four months now.

I have one of those antec cyclone blowers next to the blorb on my vid card. It moves a so-so amount of air and the air it exhausts actually feels warm so I know it's doing something. Besides, the PCI slot 1 on my mobo shares an IRQ with the AGP so I don't wanna use a card in it anyway. It does something for me, although I'm not sure how much...
*oh yeah I forgot...I think the Duron 800 actually dissipates more heat than a palamino xp cuz it's an older core

XP chips do run cooler, plus a larger die size than Durons, so a bit easier to cool.
That said, cooler is always better! My opinion= most important parts of a system: good mobo good hsf (now I just have to get one!:p )
Oh, btw spongebob- your welcome! Having money in your pocket is over-rated anyway!
