Can overclocking the memory too high cause stutters? I'm playing FEAR and I get like smooth frame rates than 1 massive 2 second lag...then smooth and massive...It's like random, or load triggered...!!!

Things I've done in the past two day...

Bios modded the card to run stock at 570/1200 . Highest Temps seen has been 74, but will stutter at 60s...

Changed the PF from set 1g-1.5g to windows controlled on a seperate partition on a seperate 10 gig drive. The partition itself is 1.5 gigs and currently, windows is using 400 mb...

Im thinking its either the graphics memory or the pf...which one is it tho!!.... The psu was just changed to 480 watts and I only have 2 hd, and 1 dvd, and 1 ddr2 stick, so that cant be it...well....4 fans...but still...

....I wanna cry..... I don't know what's wrong...It's not power or heat or drivers. I'm going to sacrifice performance and switch the pf back to the main system partition again.... I wonder how much I'll give up. The windows dump is affect right now since I have the pf on a seperate drive.

F.E.A.R. is a very ram dependant game. I have a 6800GT Pcie clocked at 450/1180 h20 cooled and evry once in a while i get some lag in certain parts of the game.

Quake4, COD2 and other games i have run liquid smooth. My guesses are the video card and system ram. i did notice when the GF4 Ti series where out using a 64mb card gave me the same problems. As i upgraded to a 128mb card i got better performance and less lag in games. Also increasing system ram for example from 256mb to 512mb definately decreased lag.

Using a 1gb of ram and a 256mb video card , the lag pratically dissapeard. Now the more intensive games like FEAR, BF2, Quake4 are resource and ram dependant, thus is why you get that "stutter" effect.

To help smooth this out you can :

Lower the settings on the game and video card
Swap video cards to a 16 pipe card
Adding more system ram helps as well.

Not really much else you can do i'm afraid.

ya the newer games are VERY ram dependent... bf2 on all high settings... uses almost 1 gig of system ram. thats why i run at medium so i use about 800mb total.

Its not your gfx card... i have mine clocked at 615/1272 and it runs just fine. DONT worry about the ram on the gfx card heatin up... i put a thermal probe on mine and the temp on them only increased 1*C from 900mhz to 1272mhz. just make sure you have a little airflow over them and your fine.

Couple of questions, is the drive that the PF is located on equal in performance then that of the main drive? When your playing your game and you get the stutters is your HD light on your case going like crazy, if so then your hitting the swap, PF, file because your running out of ram. I have had this a couple times in bf2 when im running a bunch of thing where all of the sudden BYE BYE FPS... while my hd light is blinking at me like a freakin firecracker.

I'm gonna check it now. But I just disabled nview. I had two different wallpapers going at 1024x768. It's a single wallpaper. I don't know how that would help but I'm just trying to revert to the old configuration I had before all this mess with the stuttering happened...Yes...There was a time when I played FEAR stutter free with my choice of settings.... Now I'm turning off soooo many features just to get playable rates.

EDIT: YES!!! turning to one single wallpaper has allowed me to revert to my old settings..!! Not a single second of lag and around 40 fps on all max except textures(only 128 mb on card) and fsaa 2x, aa4x. Also, my sound card sucks, so its at medium. But FEAR looks great, plays great, and I remember why I overclocked again... :) Oh well... I had Nalu the naked chick on one monitor and the nVidia logo in silver on the other... It was the biggest display of fanboyeurism... But FEAR showed me that's not the way to go...

i think b/c he just mentioned:

" I had Nalu the naked chick on one monitor and the nVidia logo in silver on the other."

Must mean he has separate wallpapers on dual monitors

Glad he's got it straightened out :)

ram can make a huge difference
I had to cut back on my overclock to play far cry

I was running at 270FSB when my ram was 533 ram and I had all kinds of problems with that game. Everything else I played (oblivion, rts' etc) played fine it was just that game. I tried everything. Old drivers patches you name it. Finally took my OC down to 265 and everything worked perfectly. The only thing I can figure is a ram issue because I had been running 270 for a couple of months without issue before trying to play that game
