I keep hearing about the 8800GTX and how it should be DirectX 10 supported.

I own a 7800GTX and I wanted to hear what you guys thought about waiting for DX10 cards to come out.

I hear all these little rumors that DX10 wont be backwards compatible. (Total garbage IMO)

I really don't mind that DX10 isn't backwards compatible. They would have to change the new OS so much that any performance changes will be neglected. Of course, anything can change in a year. :)

I think the 7800GTX is a great card, and it should last you a year to two years. Remember, it takes an extremely long time for games to use the new dx10. We're still seeing what Directx 9.0c can do. So I think you're fine for now unless you want a performance increase.

Id keep the 7800GTX. I know I am, plus I may just go SLI. Like Papier said, it takes devs along time to transfer over to a new DX.

Well, I just bougth a 7900gtx 512 and had a 7800gtx. I was thinking about waiting for DX10, but not many games are going to take advantage of it for a while. ;)

This is something I've been contemplating...

I just dont see the new cards not being backwards compatable. That has to be the biggest load of {you know what} I've ever heard. Every previous gen has always been backwards compatible. Imagine buying a 8800, and not being able to play a old game like startcraft... LAME

From what ive been readin about windows vista it will run in DX10 native-mode if your video card can run DX10 and a so-called DX9L "compatability" mode if it can't. Windows Vista from an architectural(sp?) standpoint will be as big an evolution for gaming as it was going from MS-DOS based games to Windows 95 games. (That was quite a bit more dramatic but in essense it's the same evolution).

So, playing Startcraft on a DX10 card (only the father knows why you would want to) will be possible, but it will be running in a compatability mode which we see sometimes in XP but it will be even more of an occurance in Vista as people refuse to let go of their DX7 and earlier games but want M$ latest and greatest. :).

So in reality Vista should be your driving force for getting a DX10 card (i've even heard speculation that DX10 wont run on XP). If you wont be getting Vista for a while I wouldnt bother with a DX10 card.

I dont see the need to upgrade from 7800gtx sli to 7900 but for dx10...I think its only worth upgrading if u really like a game and want to play it, while it looks good. Thats the reason I upgraded from one gtx to 2...if another game came out I liked in the next few months, I am pretty sure I would upgrade again. Maybe my simple-minded way of thinking is not the best way but works for me.
DX10 is only important when vista is out but more importantly, when a game demands it...like hl3...a major game

for now i would just add another card like i did, and really liking it by the way ;)

vista/dx10 won't matter for a year or more.

yes this the question that was turing in my mind last month.
get 7900gt or wait until vista +dx10 card come
1)vista as said in news will be done soon in the summer or a bit later but who now when reallt it will come
2)dx 10 game i agree that i must take a lot of time to start making game in dx10. but as market need grow . this can be done alot faster .i can see this cearly with px shader 2 and 3 in dx 9 . after just a waile all game are comming with borth furute
3)the prize and this is the big question espically if dx 10 will be for vista only . so we need to buy vista system then a brand new card with very and very high prize

4)i have seen crysis trailler i have heard somewhere (rumer) that the game will come dx10 compatible
the trailler is awesome i have never seen better texture quality .

so the conclusion 3 (-) and maybe 1 (+) i would stay with solid dx 9 card like my brand new 7900gt intil something really worthly happen

I figure, since dx10 will be primarily a Vista thing, that I will wait. I plan on waiting 3-6 months after Vista is released to make the switch anyhow. 1) To save a little for a new rig and 2) to wait for some of the initial bugs to be worked out of Vista.

I will wait till 8xxx series comes out and there are two reasons why i will wait
1) I am quite satisfied with my 6600 gt at the moment
2)Have to wait till summer to earn some money :)
