View Full Version : Oblivion - I don't have a fighting chance!

Is Oblivion just a hard game to play or is it me (very likely the latter). I am currently at level 4 and can't seem to finish any of these quests.
The first quest I'm having problems with is the "Unfriendly Competition" quest. I've gotten to the Trentius Family Mausoleum but the two guys in there just rip me to shreads. I might get one or two hits before I die.
Second quest is the one for the 4th commentary. When I get to where I meat the "sponsor", the thugs come out and slaughter me. There's at least 3 of them and I can't even kill one!!
What's the deal with that? I thought this game was "scaled", but the only thing that seems to be scaled is the armor and weapons. The enemy's are too hard!
I'm playing:
Dark Elf
Atronach
Assassin
Level 4
Any suggestions?

I am at level 3 and I have done both of those quests. On the sponsor mission (I think I am thinking of the correct mission) I let the guy I am following do most of the fighting and I just helped. The unfriendly competition quest I just fought the two guys straight up. I took out the guy with no armor first and then the other guy. I had to kind of run and fight at the right times, but I made it. It was close though. I will put in this disclaimer...I am not an RPG guy, but this game has me hooked so the way I did it may not be the best/correct way.
You need plenty of health potions, good armor, and a weapon that does decent damage. If you have a shield, learn how to block. I must not of done that sponsor quest, but I did the "Unfriendly Competition". Think I only died once. I save often, so I just replayed it again.

a good suggestion is run, attack, and run, attack, run, this will dwindle down the enemies health and hopefully preserve yours, i did this once when a guard chased me accross cyrodille (however you spell it) at level 2 cuz i stole something...or something, so i ran backwards, threw fireballs and arrows at him, when i was out of arrows i changed to my longsword went in for a slash, backed up and threw fireballs and healthed up
i am now a level 22 imperial and i'm doin just good with my glassness

LOL I did so much running and healing/restoration during my first 5 levels, then I buffed up my agility and security skills by sneaking around and picking locks. Once you're good enough at sneaking, you can run through Oblivion and steal a sigil stone without anybody seeing you. You also acquire Sneak Attack, so when you sneak up behind someone you can do 6X damage on your first strike and bypass their armor.
forget about sneaking through oblivion...I have just plain run through at least 10 gates and grabbed the stone. It's not even worth the trouble of taking out the baddies.

If are like me, I dont know the chances of that, you most likeley have picked up a wide array of stuff in the game before the quests you are asking about. The items could range anywhere from potions to enchanted weapons. Point being that every time you are in a sticky spot, pop open that inventory of yours and look for something to give you an edge... anything.
Yes, use your inventory. Try and find some enchanted weapons before a big fight if you can, they give you a real edge. I like the ones that do fire, ice or lightning damage. Make sure all your gear is fully repaired and charged. Also, in combat, don't strike at an enemy who is blocking, when you recoil they get at least one free hit on you.

A combination of sleep and improving your major skills. I forget which thing it's under, but you can actually see how far you are from moving up to the next level in the little menu thing.

You have your skills set in two groups, major and minor. Each time you improve your major skills by total of 10 points you go up a level. On the right side of the compass there will be a new icon which means you need to sleep.
It doesn't matter how long you sleep, 1 hour or 24.
