Well, I'm messing with my bud's new PC here.
It's based on a Shuttle AK31 mobo with Tbird 1.4ghz.
All was going well until I tried to run a 3d demo.
I know the heatsink isn't that great and it was running a bit warm at 48C. So I set the BIOS system shutdown threshold at 65C.
I'm starting the demo and BAM, it shuts down. All power to everything is cut. So nothing works now. The heatsink was pretty hot.
When I hit the power, it bumps the fans with power, but only for a moment. If it were the CPU, I'd think everything would still power up. I've tried resetting the CMOS with no luck.
Any ideas?

try resetting the cmos. also, whenever a cpu gets really hot, it can take the motherboard with it. but i would try the cmos thing first...make sure it is un-plugged.
Yeah, sometimes you have to wait 10 seconds and sometimes you wait 10 minutes. :(

I've tried to reset the CMOS to no avail.
But there is no burnt smell or anything.

It's been about an hour now. I've reset the CMOS. It's just wierd how it bumps the fans like that.
make sure you trip the PSU switch off then back on again. Wait a few seconds! Or unplug from the wall! The mobo might be thinking the CPU's still to hot.
It worked for me last time I couldn't get a reboot out of my last mobo. Not due to overheat but still.
Wish you luck!

I've unplugged it and switched the PS off several times. I'll try the cable, but that's wierd.

Nah, I've even switched to a different power cord with the same thing.

I've checked the CPU. It looks fine and there is no evidence of overheating.
Still the same thing. Crap. I'm not in the mood to take out my PS from my PC.

I've had the exact same thing happen to me!!! Its the psu. I had ordered a brand new Enermax 431w psu and was damn happy to replace my old 300w cheap one. This is for my rig that i have now (see sig) Plugged the psu in, turned on my computer, ran fine for about 2 minutes, then bam! my computer shuts down... Tried EVERYTHING!!! well almost. Decided to switch back to my old psu (300w) plugged everything, then with my fingers crossed, pushed the power button. Woohoo! It was the psu. My computer is back up and running. It did the same thing you described, bumped the fan just a bit but nothing else. Definitly try another psu if you have one available. I can almost guarantee it'll work!

You could try this CPU on ur mobo, or ur CPU on his mobo...

alright. It's the power supply. I plugged in another one and it fired right up. I guess he'll be RMA'in a PS soon. I wish I could get this one to work somehow. It does give that little bump of power.

1 question, why does the ps go bad when the computer automaticly shuts down (since you told it to in bios when it hits a certain degree)
Im afraid to set mine to shut down automaticly now :( :(

In other words, the motherboard didn't shut down the system, the bunk PS did when I tried to load something intensive.
the ps may not be fried
have you tried flipping the 110volt switch back and forth once
I think it resets a breaker or something
had to do it once myself :D
