hello i am building a computer soon and i am debating on either geting 2 74 gb raptors in raid 0 or 1 74 gb raptor and one maxtor 500 gb 7,200 harrdrive? Which one should i go with. I will be using this computer for gaming... alot of gaming , and watching movies and downloading some stuff. So which one should i go with?

You won't see much performance with one Raptor. You have to make the decision between speed and storage. My suggested choices would be 2x 74gb Raptors, or 4x 250gb Caviars. Both will be approx the same cost. Raptors will probably whip the caviars for the gaming, but you'll sacrifice in shear space.

with 2x74gb if one drive goes you lose everything...I'd personaly get a single 74 now for OS and games, and the larger drive (the 500gb has a large premium...I'd get a 300gb or so) and later down the line get a second 74gb for RAID 0
1 x 74G Raptor along with a storage drive on the side. Thats the way mine is and I wouldnt have it any other way :)

well put...get one raptor rand one storage drive, and later on when raptors lower in price grab another one

I use a single 74GB Raptor for Windows and applications and a 320GB WD SATA II for storage. I'm very happy with the setup. I can't comment on the RAID0 configuration since I've never used one.
just do like me an use 4x80s in raid 0 with 4k stripe, long as u shut it down properly and u shouldnt have any problems

If you're worried about price, go with a pair of 36GB Raptors in RAID0 for OS and the 500 for storage.
I wouldn't go with just one Raptor, you won't notice the difference with only one. Having a pair in RAID0 is where it really shines. The pair of 36GB raptors will outperform the single 74, for about the same price.

Increasing your risk of data loss by a factor of 4 seems silly to me, considering that I have RMA'd three failed Western Digital PATA drives in the past couple of years.

I don't want to start a flame war here, but I don't think we should be telling him what he will and will not notice, because none of us knows. I noticed a significant performance increase when I put my OS and applications on a single 74GB Raptor. Maybe you did not, but that doesn't mean that the OP will have the same experience.

My vote would be: 1 Raptor + 1 500GB drive. Although a 2 drive raid is faster, it is also twice as likely to fail than a single drive. If I had it to do over, that's what I'd do instead of this raid I have. JMO

well i have the two scuzys for storage, and i just use the 4x80s for os and games, man the games load like crazy, windows boots up in like 6 sec

na i wouldnt trust those 4x80s in raid 0 wit my storage maybe if they were in raid 0+1
I've been in a Raid-0 array with OS/games since November 2005. I have yet to have a problem, and recommend it to anyone with advanced common sense with regards to data and storage array maintenance.

i just gotta say, do not go with a 36gb raptor, they are too slow. If anything go with 2x74gb raptors. Using one there is a really good chance you wont notice any difference over any 7200 RPM drive.
If data loss is no issue to you(which hard drives may fail, but not terribly often to some) go with 4x250gb. You will have amazing storage and great speed.
It all comes down to what you want. however single drives(non-RAID0) should not be an option. You obviously want speed, and using single drives should never even be thought of.

I say get a single raptor and a 300+gb storage drive. This will give you storage and the option to upgrade in the future. Plus it keeps your music/videos/whatever seperated from your os which comes in handy if you like to reformat/reinstall windows every couple months like I do.
I noticed a huge difference in going from a 250gb 7200 seagate to my raptor.

the 36gb's are fast but it's old tech and the newer 74gbs have faster seek times. putting 2 36gb's in RAID 0 is probably similar performance if not less bandwidth than 2 of the newer SATA 7200rpm disks.

Anyone see me recommending 36GB HDD's?
Here's my advice: Dont buy Enterprise level HDD's if the rest of your system is budget grade, low level parts. Period.

Single drive and speed? Raptor 150GB, get another later for Raid0 ;)
250GB drives for storage :)

I vote 1 Raptor 150 and 2x 250GB drives non RAID. Should be the same price as a 74 Raptor and a 500GB drive. Then get another Raptor 150 when the price falls.
Raptor 150 = ~$250
250 drive = ~$80 x2
total = $410
Raptor 74 = $130
500 drive = ~$300
total = $430
Or you could get 2 Raptor 74s and 2 250s for about the same price too. Only reason for the 2 250s is for redundency. If one fails, you lose half your data. If your 1 500 drive fails, you lose everything. And its a lot cheaper for a pair too.

Solid advice there, Losing data BLOWS.

is the raptor 150 faster then two 74 raptors in raid 0 ? ok thank you i am probaly going to go with the 1 150 raptor and maybe two 250 hds or two 300 hds thank you
No, there is litle difference between current version (00FLC0) 74G Raptors and their 150G siblings. Two 74s would be faster (in situations where STR counts) then a single 150G.

Little is in dependent on who is doing the judging I think..
But there are stats to look at.
Stats (http://www.storagereview.com/php/benchmark/suite_v4.php?typeID=10&testbedID=4&osID=6&raidconfigID=1&numDrives=1&devID_0=309&devID_1=306&devCnt=2)
And Desktop Single User winner according to Storage Review
http://www.storagereview.com/articles/leaderboard.html
Two of them will be faster then two 74's in raid, but for tasks were STR counts the most, no one 150GB is not going to be faster then 2 Raid0'ed 74's

I once used two 7200RPM drives in raid 0. Later, I put two raptor 36Gb in raid 0. Was it faster? For file transfer, yes. To load games (Morrowind), yes a little bit. But the access time is a little longer with drives in raid 0, which mean it can be slower for some applications where you have to load or save a lot of small files! For now, I have a 74Gb raptor and a 250Gb Samsung drive that I bought for storage. Still have one of my former raptor 36Gb which was raided before.
As for security, I lost two drives (one at a time) when I had raid 0. In the two cases, I saw signs that one drives was failing and always had time to backup my data; never lost anything. The thing when you see corrupt files somewhere in explorer or something like that is to NOT turn the computer off. Make the backup right away and it will usually be fine (if you don't wait a long time, and if the currupt data was not your important data). If the drive shuts down and spin up again, the chances of death are greatly increased. I know I had more than 6 hard drives deaths and it was always like that.

I would look to using some kind of RAID. As long as you run some kind of backup to another drive you are ok.

I got one 36GB raptor and it does the business and two 500GB Caviars in RAID 0 :D. It depends on what you need more, performance or storage.

I'm also thinking about getting a couple 74 gb raptors to run in a raid 0 array. Do newegg and zzf only sell the newest (00FLC0) versions of the 74 gb?
I will make this short and sweet:
I HATE Maxtor. I love WD.
Get the raptor if you know whats good for you.

raid is definatley faster...i got 2 raptor74s in raid1 mirror and they blaze..bam bam..windows loads and programs open...i am gonna add 2 more and then unplug one for a backup...i dont care about the space for the op system...i got 3 300g wds' for space

I haven't really noticed much difference going from a 7200 IDE to a 74GB Raptor. Haven't tried RAID, so cannot comment on it.
I can echo these comments. I am thinking of trading my 74gb raptor (latest revision) for two 36gb Raptors so that I can RAID them, but with the comments in here about them being slower, I am unsure if I want to do that...
Anyone have exerience with this particular switch....???
I ran a single 74GB Raptor in this system for almost a year.
I bought another one & set up a Raid 0.
The only difference I notice the system is faster benchmarking.

ew don't go to 36gb raptors. They are a fair bit slower than the 74's.
Guys... single raptors are a waste for 90% of people... If you want serious speed without spending a ton just buy 2-4 250gb drives, they are about $100 a piece new and run RAID0. :)

I havnt seen Raid1 benchies in a LONG time :)
