i had a bad stick of memory. so while i was replacing it, i decided to "reseat" my heatsinks. to see if it would run cooler. well boy was in for a surprise. because it is a very tight fit on my motherboard, when i was replacing one heatsink i chipped the corner off the die of one cpu! just a small chip, like 3 millimeters. right across the top left corner. anyways that cpu now runs at 56c. idle 66 under full load. i know this is way too hot. BUT, the machine doesnt lock up now! it was the bad memory that made it lock up.
i know if you chip a fcpga p!!! you can attend its funeral in about 2 weeks to a month. esp. if it is o/c'd.
>>my question's are: will this little chip in the die probably kill the cpu shortly?
any way i can get it running at the same temp it was before, or lower? (46c. idle,53c. full load).
can i REPAIR the chip? should i even worry about this?
thank you,

Sounds like you've got a Duron. If that's the case, then you should be fine, beside the high temps. I heard of Durons running with all four corners of the core chipped. Your only problem, AFAIK, will be heat. Make sure you're using Vcool (http://www.naggelgames.de/vcool/VCool.html) to keep your temps down. It's free and dropped the temp of my XP 1600+ by 5°C while folding.

actually, im running dual mp 1800's at 1622mhz. only one cpu is damaged, and running much hotter than the other one now. originally they were running about the same. so is the MP ok with this damage?
also, doesnt vcool slow down the machine? whats the point of overclocking if im gonna use a program to throttle it back?
thank you,

i dont know what it is made out of. but the corner broke off. and now it broke across the top. the problem is my alpha heatsinks i tried to mod to work on this board. it is over heating way bad now that i lapped them crooked again. duh. so i will get new heatsinks. i have to seat the heatsinks just right to get 48c. idle. otherwise its so hot it wont even boot. these heatsinks that i modded are clamping down with way to much pressure and are lapped unevenly. so thats why it broke. plus if i leave for a momemt and the heatsink shifts on the cpu it will overheat and fry. bad deal. but i'm the idiot. i get some good cpu's and try to save a few bucks using inappropriate heatsinks.

There's a lesson in that for everyone kids...
(Always sorry to hear of an unfortunate series of events like that sendatolli)

thank you for your condolences rad.
the lesson is called "pennywise but pound foolish". that which i am certainly guilty of.
furthermore, upon closer investagation of the cpu the die looks like titanium or something. metal? if it is some sort of soft metal like titanium, it is rigid but fairly soft. to give you an idea of the amount of tension on the clip i made for that alpha pep66, it tore off my fingernail and broke a screwdriver trying to apply it. ouch.
yes indeed, folks, i am a bonafide idiot today. actually i am not an idiot, i have been overclocking for a while(intel). although, gorrilla tactics are never a good idea when it comes to something as fragile as a cpu.
the story goes like this. i was too cheap to spend another 60 bucks for two heatsinks(which i am subsequently going to get now). so i modded two alpha pep66's. i didnt lap them evenly because i didnt have the proper file handy at the moment. so i sloped on a lot of artic silver and tightened the clip to, oh, about 60 pounds! jammed it on there and broke it!
at least it still works right now(knock on wood) currently running at 46c. as i type this.
so i dont really need any advise on this subject. unless someone wants to speculate on whether the chip will live or die at this point.
if this helps any newbies not to do this job, or any impatient o/cr's it is not all bad. except for me!
if any people want to call me an idiot or offer condolences both are welcome.
it seems i am ruining computers at the rate of about 4 a year these days. hey, it beats selling them on ebay. not!
almost crying,
