View Full Version : Are A64s pickier about ram?

In January I purchased an OCZ 2gb DC PC3200 kit (http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_el_ddr_pc_3200_dual_channel_platinum) when there was a good rebate on it. From January until a week ago I was running it at 2-3-2-5 333MHz dual channel in an Athlon XP rig with no problems and flawless in Memtest 86. A week ago I finally purchased the rest of of my new A64 system and now the ram is failing. Windows is stable but games either refuse to run or crash after extended play. At 2-3-2-5 400MHz(rated speed) it passes Memtest tests 0-7 but the entire machine freezes as soon as test 8 starts. At 2-3-2-5 333MHz it passes tests 0-7, but fails test 8 with 70 some errors. If I take it all the way down to 2-3-2-5 266MHz it passes all tests, but I still get some error in games. Of course I put it back in the XP machine to retest and everything is OK at 333MHz, though it does throw out a few errors if I run it at 400MHz.

Is it common for A64s to be more sensative to errors like this? It just seems so odd that something that the A-XP saw as perfect the A64 can't stand. :shrug: Both machines run at stock speeds BTW. I don't OC, I just like seeing what others can do.:D

V1.x = 2.6 Volts

V2.x =2.8 Volts

What voltage is each machine running the vdimm at?

I believe they are 2.6v dimms(pic of dimms (http://www.stockton.edu/~stk21295/oczram.jpg)). The A-XP BIOS memory voltage was left to "Auto", but it can only be set to 2.6v or 2.7v, so it should have been OK across the board. The A64 was also running "Auto" vdimm, but the ASrock 939Dual board only has two other options, "Normal" and "High". I've been trying to find out what those mean, but I couldn't tell you what voltages it runs. I suppose I'll keep playing around with BIOS settings and see if I can't appease the Opty.
