Hi guys, now that the price cuts have arrived, there is a $150 CDN price difference between the Presler 930 and the Presler 950. Does anyone have experience on what the expected difference in an average max overclock on good air between these chips would be? Should I just go for the cheap 930 or will I likely see a reasonable performance benefit from going with the 950?

Thanks for the reply, Nasgul. Interesting...I would definitely be happy with 4.5GHz. Does anyone have experience with the overclocking capabilities of the 930 vs the 950? I assume the 950 would get a bit higher, but if it's < 5%, it's probably not worth the extra money. Any thoughts?

Pentium D 930 = 3.00GHz stock
Pentium D 950 = 3.40GHZ stock

hmm 400mhz for an extra 150 bux + taxes...

I'm not concerned with stock speeds at all though...just their average/expected max overclock with a Big Typhoon :).

950 got the 17x multi and the 930 have 15x... what mb are you going to use?

Btw: my 950 es is @62c 100% load 4545mhz @ 1,5v bios TT-BT but not the stoc fan.. Delta ABF1212SH (mb speed control 3300rpm)

Will be using the ASUS P5WD2-E Premium, which by the looks of it is the same board you've got.

are you going to get a droop mod? lol (on air what a silly question my bad)
hay, but plenty would do it.. ;)

Proth has had bad luck hitting 5Ghz on 930's.. and Ross has his a bit over with a Single Stage Direct die Phase.. Im not sure what the 930's upper limit is on high end air, check the CM Pressler sticky.
btw.. the C1 stepping just might change the high clocks for the better ;)

I've heard a lot about the droop mod. Is it necessary on air with the P5WD2-E Premium to hit ~4.2-4.5GHz?

I wouldnt think so.. higher clocks maybe

There is a slightly better chance the 950 will O/C a little higher final clock speed due to Intel's tendency to speed bin, but what you might gain there is offset by the higher FSB of the 930. Personally, I would get the C1 stepping 930 and save the extra cash and enjoy the higher FSB.

you seem really stuck on the BT do you have it already?

or are you just using it as a point of referance for how well the chips clock?

Well that and the Scythe Ninja seem to be the best and somewhat quiet, and the Ninja isn't available at the two Canadian retailers I usually go through.

I think I'll go with the 930. I need it soon but hopefully the C1 will be available at my time of purchase. Thanks for your recommendations guys.

BT and the XP-90C are about the same in performance

XP-90C (http://www.behardware.com/articles/568-18/test-25-cpu-coolers.html)

BT (http://www.behardware.com/articles/568-20/test-25-cpu-coolers.html)

Tuniq Tower & Big Thyphoon are the best and on par with each other.

the TT BT is good but be prepared...it is HUGE

BT seems to be doing a good job but boy the base had smoothness coefficient of a gravel road with a huge ~half inch 1mm deep dip in one corner. Temps on stock 2.8GHz 30(i) 42(L), after some sand paper action temps are 26(i) 36(L) @ 4.2HGz

Yea the TT BT is huge, Almost too big, If I had to do it over again I would probably go xp-120 w/ fan of my choice...as I can no longer have my 120mm blower fan on my lianli case installed because the typhoon c0ckblocks it

930 is the way to go although performance is/was all over the place, from 4.2 to 5+, but would think 4.5 is the average and a relative safe bet IMO... 930 and 950 would generate about the same temps at the same speed so shouldn't be a deciding factor. Another benefit of the 930 running @ 4.5 would be a 1200 FSB in comparison to the 950 @ 4.5 for a 1058 FSB. 1200 is easily within the capabilities of the P5WD2-E.

Ran my 930 @ 4.8GHz for a few weeks on the Scythe and Zalman 9500. The Scythe worked better only if (2) 120mm fans were used. Tunic tower or BT probably is better that either of them.

Thanks again guys. I have ordered a system with the 930 and I will definitely post my results when I get things running. I'm leaving for Hawaii today for a week :) but I'll have my system as soon as I get back.

One more question, a bit off topic, but would my system be quite loud running 7 of these:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14259&vpn=TLF-S12-EB&manufacture=COOLERMASTER

case fans in my CM Stacker 830? They are rated at 22 dB. Otherwise, I can get some lower flow Scythe fans that are only about 8-9 dB (definitely quiet) but they cost 2.5 times as much (20 bucks versus 8 bucks) and that's a lot to spend on case fans. I'd like to go cheaper/higher flow but only if it's still going to be pretty quiet. Thanks!

take the fan Q's to the cooling section ;)

some spec's are overstated and some people are on top of that :)

Alright, I will re-post my question in the cooling section. Thanks.
