View Full Version : This thing any good?
I bought this last night to go along wiht my BFG 7800gs. I was having issues with my old power supply, it seems that every time the fan on my card changes Rpm's the card would studder when I was playing games. I am hoping that going with a strong power supply from the same manufacturer as the card will correct the problem. Anyway, I just wanted impressions of the pwer supply from the users here. anyone tried or heard anythign about it?

BFG is usually don't make PSU. They most likely have someone else make and label it with their name.
Personally, I would not trust it but the only way to find out is to try it. I hope that you didn't pay top dollars for that.
BFG is supposedly made by Fortron-Source (also sold under Sparkle/SPI, Powertech, BFG, some PC P&C models, and Aopen among others)
So I am guessing/hoping it will be pretty good.

Fortron does make a few selected Aopen models but I don't think they make PC P&C. PC P&C make their own power supply.
Why pay top dollars for a Fortron/Sparkle imitation when you can get a true Fortron/Sparkle for less (usually). The AOpen usually sell for more than the trueFortron.
Anyway, if it is truely made by Fortron/Sparkle, it should be OK.

What is that blue button? This does not look like a Fortron designed PSU to me but I could be wrong. I have never seen Fortron using this blue button and setup the intake fan this way (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Showimage.asp?Mode=&Type=&Image=17-702-003-02.jpg%2C17-702-003-03.jpg%2C17-702-003-04.jpg%2C17-702-003-05.jpg%2C17-702-003-06.jpg%2C17-702-003-07.jpg%2C17-702-003-08.jpg&CurImage=17-702-003-04.jpg&Description=BFG+Tech+BFGR650PSU+ATX+12v+2.0+and+EP S+12V+650Watts+Power+Supply+-+Retail).
This looks very similar to a Thermaltake TR2 setup.

In no particular order, these are the ones I know well enough to recommend based primarily on reliability.
Top of the heap industrial grade:
Zippy/Emacs
Etasis (Silverstone 560w)
Win-Tact (high watt PC P&C)
Excellent:
Fortron-Source (also sold under Sparkle/SPI, Powertech, BFG, some PC P&C models, and Aopen among others)
Seasonic (Antec Neo HE, PC P&C Silencers)
Above Average:
Enhance (most Silverstone and Akasa units)
Channel Well (Antec, Meridian XClio, some Thermaltakes)
Topower (OCZ, Globalwin, BeQuiet, Athena Power, A+GBP, Tagan, some Vantec)
AcBel Polytech (Coolermaster)
Andyson Electronics (some Hiper models, AC Ryan)
Heroichi (HEC, Compucase, a few Thermaltakes)
Average:
Enermax
Superflower/TTGI/Fore Point/Fortrex
Wintech (Sintek, Ultras that aren't the first gen X-Connect)
Sirtec (most Thermaltakes)
That's all I can think of for now - hope that helps some.

PC P&C make their own power supply.
Actually they don't. Turbocools are OEM Win-Tact, Silencers are Seasonic.
BFG no longer uses Fortron. If the unit in question is anything like the 600W model I saw, it'll be average at best. Probably won't do anything like 650W either :(
How can I test it to see what it's doing?

I had thought only Zippy makes PC P&C but I guess they only contribute parts to them along with many others.

I've never been able to determine a connection between Zippy and PC P&C.
SuperQ - I would grab a multimeter and measure the rails. This won't tell you how well it'll hold up over time, but should give you an idea how well it regulates.

When I first looked at a PC P&C a while ago, I found that it was made by Zippy/Emacs so I had thouth that only Zippy makes them. But looking at some others now, I see that Fortron, Magtech and many other PSU company contribute to them.
