Hi.
I just got Counterstrike retail, and I was wondering if some of you people could give me some tips. I'm used to playing games like Quake, where you blow people up, but CS is very different.
Can I have some pointers on how to be a better CS player?

- Duck while shooting, whenever possible-it increases accuracy enough to make a big difference.
- If you wanna be cheap, follow another guy until he gets killed, then attack his killer (who now has to reload:D)
-With the guns like styer aug and m4 and ak47, they have lots of recoil, so aim at their crotch (which will put your bullets in their chest/head) and use 3-roound bursts if far away from the target.
-LISTEN to the footsteps
-many more things..... well try those out an see if they work 4 u. Best pointer = play it a lot! :)
I didn't know about the ducking thing, thx! I've started listening to the footsteps, and its saved me a hell of a lot of times, actually. I'm getting used to the short burst thing (Like I said, I'm a Quake player)

Learn to play on de_dust. Its easily the best and most popular map. Also just find a counterstrike strategy guide on the net, there are plenty about :)

Strafe and burst is your best friend. Ducking is suicide now cuz of the nasty hitboxes.
Jumping with AK is suicide, unless you're in their face, then it doesn't realli matter=)
Learn all maps and their general "movements" Get to know patterns of where people run..anticipate and go hunt.
Dust is most common map, you'll prolly rule on it.
AK=god weapon. 2 clicks and they die.
AWP-Shoot in front of them.
Scout owns AWP=)
Uhh, if you're in a game where no one works together against a team that does, no matter how good you are you'll always lose so try to do something about that.

You can shoot throught boxes and doors, i sure have had fun with this one.
This one time at a LAN party we where playing CS online, and there was only 2 people left, me on terrorists and some other guy on CT - map was cs_malitia. Well, my friend who was sitting next to me is following the other guy around, and i was sitting behind the rear door in the basement of the house. I watched my friends screen till i saw him go for the door and fired a short burst through the door. I hit him, but he couldnt figure out where i was, so he ran arund the "back yard" looking madly for the person who had shot him- funniest thing i ever saw.

Basically it's a tactical shooter. It's not just "Spray and Pray." You have limited funds to buy weapons and armour. Learn the maps and the guns. Spend some time on single player games with 'bots, so you can learn each guns advantages and disadvantages. Learn to do tactical reloads. Don't wait until your gun is empty. NEVER STAND STILL. A motionless target is literally a sitting duck. Learn how to work together as a team. If two or three people on your team are working really well together, they are either in the same room, or have some sort of voice communication. Watch them, and follow them. I don't know how many times my roommates and I have turned a group of losers into Gods simply by working together, and having them follow our lead. If you see the person next to you drop, and didn't hear a gunshot, RUN! You're being sniped.

The first thing about CS is to STAY CALM! don't panic no matter what! The second you do, you die.
The second thing is to stay alert, and don't get tunnel visioned. Snipers do this alot, allowing someone to come from the side, and own you.
3) BE UNPREDICTABLE! CS_assault is a good map to prac this on, as the T's are usually fish in a barrel or highly entrenced depending on the FIRST CT IN TE DOOR! I know this sounds strange, but that fist guy in decides the round. MOst times, it will be some lone nut, but that lone nut can be you. I'll assume you have played assault before, and if not play it now. first, try going through the green door. Than go through the green door, but turn right instead of left. Then go through the main door. then green agin. then go through the vent. Then dont go in at all, sit and snipe outside. You see where i'm goin with this?
4) be a team player!!!!! get a headset and run the voice config so you can talk to teamates. ONce I co-ordinated a team in a pub server, and ended up saving them all. Guys would devote themselves to guarding me so I could talk to the team through vox.
BUYING
...is perhaps the most important skill. Many like to go for the biggest gun they can get their hands on, but this isn't always the best strategy. First round, buy a deagle, and 2 extra clips, making sure to stay behind a guy who bought kevlar. Next round, restock pistol, grab kevlar, and a frag grenade if possible. Next round, go for the Uzi(terrorists) ir the TMP(machine pistol-CT),with 30 extra round for it. Now you are equiped. Wait on getting a rifle until you have about 7000 dollars in your grubby little hands, as this will give you a buffer if you die. I suggest the AK or the M4A1. If you want to snipe, go for teh steyr scout utill you get really good. It's a more forgiving gun than the AWP(faster bolt-action, quieter[AWP lets people at the ends of the map know where you are, ok?])
Steyr is cheaper, as well.
And lastly, as cool as the PARA sounds, it's uses are few and far between(dynamic entry with a team behind you with accurate sub-guns) PARA helps you pin down enemies easily, but since it's so friggin inacurate, it cant kill peeps easily with it.
OH, stealth is your friend. Stay quiet, especially when your in hot ground (NME spawn zones and the like). Do this by crouching, or moving in irregular patterns, like tapping the button every 1-3 seconds to mask your sounds.
And finally, DONT GIVE UP!!!! You will be owned and raped, this is normal, but as soon as you get "it", you'll OWN!
One last thing:
Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.
You're not always l33t. Sometimes you suck. Deal with it.

not much else left untold, wally has some of the best points that i have heard.
Just when u die lock on the #1 palyer in the game and jsut watch where he hides, runs, squats, and what he uses in what situation,ie: frag nade, smoke, flahs
You wont realize how importat a well places smoke or flash is. a Good flash can totally eliminate a 3-5 man squad if you got teammates that rush in when they knwo the others are blind.

It's not camping if you use a sniper weapon.
I'm getting better w/ the sniper rifle now, actually. I don't particularily care for the magnum. Too expensive and the bolt action isn't quick enough. I'm also pretty good w/ the bullpup.

im borrowing my friends half life cd-roms for a bit and i can't figure out how to play counterstrike at all... theres only one server in there when i go to play it...anybody got any ideas??

try pressing the update button and refreash.. or maybe check our filter list as see if you are demanding too much :)

why did you buy retail cs when you can buy Half-Life game of the year edition for $12 and download cs for free? :p
the only tip i can give is to take your cs cd, carefully look at it really hard as you swing a hammer to strike it firmly so it shatters :beer:
i stopped playing at beta 3 when cs started to act like a lamer magnet.
i tried playing it a few months ago and it was so insane with all the rampat cheating and i never thoght it possible but almost every server is full of lamers, lol. l33t this and i pwn j00 that. it makes me wanna go into the rubber room :p
Science and Industry is far better anyway :)

Counter-Strike isn't the most played game in the entire world for no reason, BigRed. You need to open your eyes and see CS for what it really is, a fantastic game with tons of strategy, and even more skill that can be acquired.
As for the question at hand, I'll elaborate with things that havn't been said.
One of my best tequniques is to just jump out and shoot. For instance, when coming up to a hallway entrance, run, jump, and duck in mid air as you sail accross the opening. Dont stop shooting.
As was said, ducking makes for less recoil, which is does admirably, but dont forget that ducking while in midair works just the same as ducking on the ground.
Another tequnique, of course, is knowing the best hiding spots. I cant tell you them all, there are literally thousands. Tens per map.
If you want me to teach you all the hiding places I know, we can set up a game. If I'm only going to teach you, lag isn't a problem, so I can connect to a server near you.
You can PM, EMail me, or just reply to this thread, I'll check it often.
the only time i have played the recent cs is at lan parties (except ones im hosting), lol everyone wants to play it. its an ok game. but its only ok when you are sitting in the same room as your team so you can talk to each other and organize easily.
and the game physics are just a tad off, lol. i shot someone in the leg and it recorded it has a headshot :p
that mod just gets old really quickly because 2 shots and you are dead and you gotta wait 10 min to play again. :mad:
i like mods that DONT have a somehwat realistic damage system. aka Front line force. the only mod that does the realistic damage system well is DoD.
i dont play anything but s&i online anymore anyway, lol

You know what? I dont think you did. I have never had anything at all similar to that happen, nor have I heard of it from anyone else, besides you. The games physics are not off at all, the only complaint I have is that fingers and feet cannot be shot at, they dont register as body parts.
The only thing I can think of is that you had the reticle over someone's leg whie you were running and shooting wildly, and you scores an accidental headshot because of massive recoil.

i have played the game. and way back in early versions i was good. why not we install the old version of halflife and lets give beta 3 cs a go? :burn:
im just used to the early versions. valve really messed cs up with this new fangled netcode and such :p lol. older IS better :)

Beta 5.2 was the best, I ended at 7 cause it had changed to much.
CS is not realistic. Its an unrealistic game with 'real-life' weapons. I like realism, so I play the Rainbow 6 series (and now Ghost Recon).
And another thing is CS is not a game that requires skill. It's luck based. A newb shoots his gun while hopping around and it hits you in the head miraculously...it happens alot. If you want a game that requires skill, play any of the Rocket Arena series (q2,q3a,ut). They require skill.

I don't know why I have to keep saying it, but I'll say it again, the end of the discussion:
Counterstrike is the most-played game on Earth. Therefore, it MUST be good.
Despite it's downfalls, like a bigger headshot window in 1.3 as opposed to 1.1, and the higher pings because of the voice communication feature, and the most important (and worst) of all, cheaters. TONS of them.
But guess what? None of those matter, it is STILL the most played game on Earth.
END OF ARGUMENT.

Now children, let's all behave. It's been civil up to now, but I can easily see this as getting out of hand.
The simple fact is: people like the game. Whether you do or not is your own personal prefrence, and that is to be respected. I enjoy playing CS. That's my prefrence. Is is the greatest game ever? No. Is the only game that should be played? No. Is it entertaining? I think so. Is it fun? Again, I think so. So I play it. Simple as that. If you like another game, go play that one. There's literally MILLIONS of games available on the various different platforms available. So find what you like and play it. But have an open mind about it, and respect others opinions.
And I don't think that getting an organized group communicating is cheating, per se. But good voice communications do give you an unfair advantage.:D

LOL q2, q3, and ut - those require skill, you have got to be Shi**ing me, those require no skill at all. The firepower alone is insane, nucleare missles, the redempion relic. LOL those alone and i can win a game. i mean really how does it require skill for me to get killed then my body explodes and takes 3 with me, i die once and kill 3, ya thats because im good

(your talking straight deathmatch, no it doesn't require skill...it's like CS deathmatch..no skill..point and shoot)
You don't think it takes skill to rocket jump around walls and then dodge a couple rockets coming at your face?
How hard is it to hide behind a crate while someone unloads from the other side of the map, they reload, you turn and put ONE bullet in them and there dead? That doesn't take skill
I was getting 72-4 scores in CS all the time back in the day, if you can get a score of 30 kills/30 mins in Rocket Arena your really good...how you like dem apples.

oh yeah i have to agree that it takes some skill to play rocket arena
i used to play that alot with my lan buddies, man i sucked at it, i would spawn in and 3 sec later be dead, if there is alot of ppl and bots playing and you manage to stay alive for like 2 mins straight you are a kick butt player then,
i mean dodging rockects when they are everywhere is hard, and hitting those jump pads and just everytime you move somewhere there is someone with a rocket launcher in your face. well lets say it does take some skill to play that game.

I might have been able to do that at one time in Rocket Arena 1, but I couldn't do that anymore.

cs is more realism based. it does take skill. yes, there is luck involved (as there is with any fps game). but the person with skill will win far more often than the random noob does.
what's wrong with waiting for someone to reload to put one bullet in their head and kill them? you think in real life it'd be much different? if someone fired a full clip at a barricade i was sitting behind, and then didn't bother to hide himself while reloading, do you think it'd take that much "luck" to aim and shoot at a sitting target?
i also think cs is much more strategy based. you have to worry about hostages, enemies flanking you, how many bullets are left in your clip, and how much noise you make. hey, if you dont like it, you dont like it. there are tons of people who DO like it and dont care that you dont.
back to the subject of this thread:
be quiet! especially if you're the last one or one of the last ones alive on your team.
rush! be there before your enemy thinks you will be.
hide! nothing wrong with a good sneak attack.

I'd agree with you if people actually played the game it was supposed to be played. Nowadays its just deathmatch.

I've noticed that as well. Few people play it as a strategy game anymore. Its spray and pray now.
