View Full Version : What kind of spider is this?

Well I was watching house, I was laying on the couch nothing on but the TV, no lights and I see a little black spot moving out of the corner of my eye and I knew from that point it was a friendly spider. So what did I do next? I grabed my flashlight and proceded to look at it, then I got the novel idea of taking pictures of it, then placing a quater next to it to get a idea of size.

So what kind of spider is it? I always thought it was a wolf spider as they tend to roam at night and have no nest/webs and she fits the size of 1/2 to 2" in size. However unlike a wolf spider she is not shy, poking at it with my AR-15 it tried to attack it :) So is it a wolf spider?

What is a thread without pics :D

And in case you are wondering what happened to the spider, well she is under a bowl I was eating chips in till I go up stairs then I will let it loose to kill the other more annoying bugs down here. However if it gets to close to my feet... it dies!

ETA: Reading from http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/swolfspi.html they say wolf spiders make good pets :D

I'm not a biologist, but I think you got it right. It looks like what we call a Wolf Spider, but it looks kind of small as Wolf Spiders go.

The ones we have down in Mississippi can get rather large. I've seen one on the porch that was larger than a half dollar.

I hate those damn things. One about 4 inches in diameter chased me around my room...

"poking it with my AR-15" ?

LMFAO, that's friggin' hilarious.

yeah, i think that's a wolf-spider. Is that a photochopped quarter? :D

Hmm, I dont think its a wolf spider. From my experience with wolf spiders they are much more akin to triantulas. But I will say I used to have those all over my room, at least one a day, until I got my sub in here, for some reason nothing comes in here anymore. :D

But as for if they are lethal, in a book I read it said that they are similiar to the good ol hobo spider, you know, those nasty little demons that chase you. :D

But as for that worst spider I have had, it was a 3 inch wide leg span, and the body was like a large penut, scared the living hell out of me.

Actually, it is a wolf spider. Just did a quick Google search. Apperently, there are several species of Wolf Spider.

From the link that Stavros posted it looks like its a Lycosid heh

That looks more like a Brown Recluse to me, but I could be wrong, the picture is kinda hard to see, but for your sake I hope I'm wrong, those are nasty spiders.

i really hope not. i hate those things. The thing's been sitting on my ceiling in the same spot for at least 2-3 hours now. no clue what it's doing.

yesterday morning, i woke up saw it next to my light (middle of the room ceiling), and then i closed my eyes for a few minutes and it disappeared...

this time i fell asleep for a few hours and it's still there

maybe it's dead haha

edit: after reading up a bit, highly doubt it's a brown recluse. They're not native anywhere near the north-east USA, as far as I have read.

it sure does look like a wolf spider, i get them in my room all the time in spring. they'll just sit there like they're dead until you try to catch them. if you aren't successful they scatter off quickly. i flush them down the toilet.

leave them be. i can't say i'm fond of spiders (kinda arachniphobic i guess), but i know they kill the bugs and other crap in my house (and i get a ton of other annoying bugs around the house), so i let them live.

you know, the spider i posted a pic of is still on the ceiling in the EXACT SAME SPOT... still hasn't moved.

i think mine is also a wolf-spider.

if i wanted a pest eater i sure wouldnt want it to be a spider, they scare me;)

when i lived in florida i would intentionally let in Geckos to keep my pest problem in check, i kinda wish i had some here, anyone want to send me some?

geckos are much more "lady" friendly than spiders as well:)

yeah, geckos are so cool!

i had a salamander.. didn't do much. and it dissappeared from it's cage one day... couldn't hold the thing without harming it (it took breath through it's skin, and oils on human skin would clog up the holes in the salamander's body, meaning it couldn't breathe).

though i'll stick with my never-moving spider (thats around 6 hours it hasn't moved now)

Yep, Geckos kick ass for getting rid of roach problems:D I bought one at the pet shop and released it and within a week I never saw another roach and would only occasionally see the Gecko. Check the local pet shops for one as they should be pretty cheap.

Edit: I lived in Florida at the time.

I would stomp on one of those every other night in the driveway when I lived with the parents. The ones that carry the young on their back are fun to step on, cause all of the little babies scatter everywhere.

I guess it's a wolf-spider. I've always called it that anyways.

It's a wolf spider. We've got them all over alabama.

THIS is a brown recluse. you see one of these and you grab a shoe FAST.

Those aren't the only ones we've got. I took a picture of this little turd outside my wife's apartment a few years ago. gguhhhhh.... gives me the willies just thinking about it. I'm REALLY arachnophobic.

Why use a shoe when you can use an open flame such as a torch?

You know, I've got to tell you that I have set up a "spider free zone" in my house. I don't care if it's a wolf spider, daddy long-legs, or frickin' Lolth (if you get THAT reference, you know you're a geek)--it's seeing the bottom of my boot.

I got one of those forward emails the other day that showed the progression of a Brown Recluse spider and there's no way I'm taking the time to identify a spider.

Stomp first, ask questions later.

For those of you who are NOT faint of heart, here is a google image search to what I saw about those brown recluse bites:

Don't say I didn't warn you!

The progression of those images (day 1-day 10) have been under debate.

Under debate or not, the Brown Recluse does some serious damage. And like anything else it depends on the individual person how their body reacts to it or not. I for one don't want to find out, that's for sure. :p

i lost track of the spider in my room... kinda freaking me out, being the very slim possibility that it's a brown recluse, and that i have absolutely no clue where it is.

this morning it was running around the walls aimlessly in circles.. rather than sitting on the ceiling all day (literally, all day)

Hehe. Wusses. :D

Back home as a kid I dealt with red-backs and funnelwebs. The spiders werent the biggie to deal with, it was the snakes. :D

Archer, what brand AR do ya have? I have 3 Bushmasters, 2 Rock River's and picking up a new Armalite tomorrow. Can never have enough of them. :D

My AR is a PWA lower with a 20" A4 kit from J & T Distributing. I was thinking about getting a 16" mid length upper from Rock River but that was before I got the idea of reloading in my head.

I saw spider in my mothers house and it was huge, it was like the skinny version of a taranchula, I think it was callled a tree spider... Considering I HATE spiders, this one being the biggest I have ever seen, I was terrified

Those pictures (while a rare, untreated case) look authentic, according to my dad's fiancee who happens to work at a hospital. I originally thought those pictures were fake. She said she had seen some bad brown recluse bites that looked similar to that.

Lol... my old roommate hated anything with more than 4 limbs and moved in his room.

Picture a 300lb 6'1" guy balancing precariously on his bed with a shoe in one hand (raised above and behind his head in striking position) ready to smack a spider on the wall.

That spider's harmless, wouldn't worry about him. You could've picked him up if ya wanted. They're pretty docile, at least towards me :) BR and BW are the devil though. I can't stand fighting an enemy I usually don't see...
