I am currently running an Intel rig using a 50w peltier and air cooling. How big a TEC do I need to cool an Athlon XP 1700 down to say, 20C or lower, when overclocking? I have lots of airflow in my case, and I don't want to start over by switching to water cooling. I will be running this TEC off of the 12v line of a 250w power supply.

120watt one should get you down there if you have good enough cooling

Yep, a 120 watt peltier should do fine. Donny Paycheck managed to get his XP down to 10°C

You should ask him for details

If you want to get some speed out of your XP, watercool at least a 156 watt pelt. A single 172 watt or dual 120s would be better. FWIW, I have tried a 156 watt pelt, single and dual 172 watt pelts and dual 120s. The best results were with dual 120s. Think of the future too. A dual 120 watt setup should be able to handle the heat from and XP clocked at over 2 GHz.

One more note. Lest you think my recommendations on pelt sizes are to large, take a look at this HS review (http://www.a7vtroubleshooting.com/articles/coolers/index.htm) done with the Palominos in die diode. Depending on the HSF, full load temps ranged from 64 C to 90 C. A XP with a little voltage at 2 GHz is going to put out over 100 watts.

Yep.....heh heh.....40-something F under full load! (check the sig for details)

Haven't unlocked the multiplier yet but when I tackle that then it's game on!!

Colin, my mobo currently doesn't have logic to read the thermal diode on the die. Do you know how I could make it possible for me to? A BIOS flash perhaps? Thanks....

I've also got a question about dielectric grease - where to get some. I'm going to start a new thread on it right this minute.
