What i've done is installed network cards into two p.c and set them up with all the drivers that came with them. I've set the protocols to the same. On the 1st comp the IP address is set to 1.1.1.1 and on the second it's 1.1.1.2. The subnetmask is set to 255.255.255.0 on both p.c's. The same workgroup for both. In network neighborhood both p.c's are listed but can not connect or comunicate with each other i.e cannot send files or begin networked computer games. I haven't done this before so i really haven't got a clue what im doing. Any help would be a great.
Thanx.
Try to set the IPs to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. Those IPs were specifically designed for private networking.
Then go to my computer, right click on a drive and select Sharing tab. Set everything up there, and you should be able to see that drive from network neighborhood from the other computer.
Hope this helps!

also make sure if you only have 2 pcs that you use crossover cable, if you have patch between to comps it won't work!!
The 192.168.x.x is a much better plan.
the protocol should be at tcp/ip.

What games don't work?

ipx protcol?? Yeah me and my mate have tried to play total annihilation (an old fave), red alert and stuff but it wont find the other machine. I play over the net but the lag is really anoying so we thought we'd have a go at net working, harder than i though.

Try adding the ipx/spx protocol as well.
select the nic card in network properties and then press the add button, then select protocols>microsoft>ipx/spx.
Follow the on screen instructions, restart and try you games then.
ipx/spx was used alot by older games
