My step grandpa has a TNT2 Vanta video card laying around extra. I was wondering if this video card can do DVD playback? It would be much cheaper for my aunt to have this card instead of buying a ATI Radeon LE or something else for DVD's :D

Honestly I am not sure but I personally will never run anything less than a GEForce 2 GTS card...

Dunno either, DVDs were not real big when that card was first released.

If you use a software DVD program like Windvd, maybe it will work, but I would not expect any hardware support built in the card.

I thought it was a TNT Ultra, but nowe see it is a bit of an ancient card. Maybe a software dvd prog will work , give it a whirl maybe you will have luck

alright guys...
thanks for the replies..
I'll just have to throw it in there and see what happens..

it's gonna be a 1ghz T-bird system that is only gonna be used for basic stuff and DVD once in a while..

Also trying to build the system on as little money as possible.

actually for playing dvds you could probly pick up a Rage128 card for like 20bucks, but the radeon will definately push out some beautiful dvds.....most nvidia cards except the Geforce3 have junky dvd playback....

It should work just fine. I know people who get great DVD quality out of an original STB Velocity 4400 TNT card. Hell my youngest son has an Original GeForce DDR card that works ALL of todays video games just fine with no probs. Only do you need a Geforce 2 or 3 if your a hardcore TECH FREAK like the rest of us!:p

thanks for all the post guys..
I'm gonna just have to wait until I get the rest of the computer parts and see how this TNT2 does.

If it isn't that great I'll probably get that Radeon LE

Yes we all need those new cards.. But this guy wants great dvd playback and the Raedon will provide that !

And so will a TNT2 card, in fact after putting an older TNT2 videocard against an 8500 Radeon there was very little if any difference in quality. All that matters is knowing how to maximise your current hardware. That TNT2 card will serve the purpose well.:D

I don't think his aunt would notice the difference between a TNT2 and a Radeon, unless she starts to actually look for the difference. It can't be that big, propably only somewhat crisper image.

Getting a new card for DVD playback, when there already is a capable card, sounds silly when the new cards other capabilities weren't much used. Especially when the CPU can decode the DVD's just fine and he's trying to build the system at minimal cost.
