I have an AMD Athlon MP 1600
I understand I should put the thermal compound only on that little square chip in the middle of the CPU, am I correct ?

thanks,
Denny

Oh yeah, do I also cover WHOLE heatsink, or just part of it ?

thanks !

Welcome to the forums! Yes you are correct. The heat sink compound should be applied to the CPU "die". For really well detailed instructions, see this link. (http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm)

Welcome. Just a thin layer on the chip. To make it easier put some on it the take a credit card or something then wipe across it so you are left with just a thin layer.

yes that little square is where the thermal compound goes...

only a very tiny amount is needed.

UGH
this was the most horrible experience in assembling computers for me so far.
It took me over 20 min to apply the darn compound on both processors (I have a dual system).
Also very stressful... since it was for the first time I guess.
Before, when I build computers I just used to attach the heatsink and go !

phew ... I feel like I've just done an extensive workout
Oh yeah, if you're wondering why I was stressing, it's because I didn't want my CPUs to BURN AAAAAH! !
Also, I couldn't get the right thickness.. it was either too thin or too thick, and then I just gave up kinda... I think it's right now.

If it's AS2 watch those bridges....I was a bit messy and managed to make my CPU un-POST-able until I wiped it all off of 'em. Their website says it's slightly electrically conductive in thin layers so I suspect that's what I did to mess it up. Of course, if you're using white oxide paste then no worries. Welcome to the sanitarium. As you can see I'm new here myself and I enjoy it quite a bit.

Hmm .. It should be just thin ... Really thin! Like the amount on your chip should be the size of a 1/4 of a grain of rice or so.
Should be layed out flat and smooth.

Welcome to The Forum!
Lots of good information here, and plenty of people always willing to help out.......

And some people will ALWAYS try to grab the new members for one team or another: Folding or SETI!

I personally will try to talk you into SETI <lol> but either one works well for burning in your pc, and hey- if your pc is on but you aren't using it why not use all those clock cycles for something?!

Good luck, and see ya around!
