View Full Version : Digital camera - how to stop that box popping up...
...The box which asks me what program I want to launch 'for this action'. I plug my Canon Ixus 60 into a USB port and it asks me what program I want to launch - much like when inserting a flash drive for the first time.
However, unlike inserting a flash drive there is no option 'No action'. I don't want to use any program to remove the images, I don't want to use a stupid wizard, I want to access the camera just like a USB flash drive and take the images off manually.
I CAN do this, but it means that every time I have to click cancel when this box pops up, but I want it to remember that I want none of those options...
Does anyone know how to deal with this problem? I'm on XP Pro SP1.

Buy a card reader for $5?
Card reader is my suggestion too. FOr a couple reasons:
1. Faster transfer
2. Don't have to hook the camera up
3. Don't have to deal with that box you don't like
4. Most printers have card readers now.

There are ways to turn off autorun for all devices. You can do this through the Group Policy Editor.
I still stand by my previous suggestion however.
I'm afraid I can't buy anything as money is tight (they're ~£10 here, $20 to you). Also, wouldn't I have to connect a card reader to the USB headers on my motherboard? I'm already using all of them.
I'm going to have a look at the autorun thing, do you know where it is located in the group policy editor?
Thanks for the replies.

USB Card readers can be external. Look at these ones for examples:

In Group Policy Editor, it's under Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Turn off Autoplay.
Just tested it, the disabling autoplay function doesn't seem to apply to the camera.
It may sound ridiculous, but I don't have the money to buy any card reader - I'm already in the red and it looks like I'll have to put up with this annoyance if buying one is the only option :(
I do appreciate the suggestions though.

Plug the camera in... open My Computer | Right click on the device under "Devices with Removable Storage" --> Properties | Click on the "Auto Play" Tab | Uncheck "Prompt me each time to chose an action".
Thanks redduc900 - that worked.
