I'm looking at getting a good laptop that can handle some light multitasking and light gaming. 15-17" screen, etc. But I think I want to build one. Is it like with desktops where you can save money building your own? And if so where do I look? Or should I just go with a dell or another cheap brand? I'm looking at spending 6-800$

Check out this article at Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/05/04/building_your_dream_notebook/index.html). It's almost a year old, but it has some good references. Have fun with it!

My personal preference is for the Asus laptops they are very rugged and well built, they also have a large support base because of their popularity.

AOpen also makes good laptops, ECS and Aspire are soso and hard to find depending on your location. MSI is also another alternitive but i dont know that they have the same quality as Asus.

If you ever have questions i have built about 10 Asus laptops in the past year including one for my self and a close friend, as well as several through work.

used with warranty will get you the best cost/performance ratio, building your own is not recommended by me.

Dell all the way. Most barebone 15.4" laptops are in the 700-1000 range. Best bet is to wait for a good Dell deal on the 1505 or mabey a cheap XPS M140. 14" Centrino but Intel GMA900.
