View Full Version : oc can't be that easy??

I have an asus a7v133 and athlon 1.2GB (C version) ie. 9x @ 133Mhz.

Ran it in for a while and running ~49/50C at default speed. Although the mobo default voltage is at 1.808V.

Decided to start playing @ o/cing the chip and set FSB to 140Mhz and changed clock to 9.5 (from 9).

Reported speed is now 1330Mhz and all running stable (albeit a little hotter ~52-53C).

I DIDN"T try to unlock the processor - thought I'd play with the mobo settings first. I used a couple of programs to check the reported speed (including WCPUID and SiSoft sandra) and it appears to be running at the reported speed.

Questions are: shouldn't I have had to unlock the chip? What happens if you manually change the multiplier and don't unlock the processor?

Thanks for any thoughts:)

I think everything from the factory after 1.2 is unlocked.

Nice overclock and welcome to the forum. One thing you need to keep an eye on is your heat. I assume that the temps you gave are at idle or low use. Which is a pretty high temp. Are you using the stock heatsink and fan? If your chip was locked you would not have been able to change the multiplier. there is some good info in the beginner guides which you can access thru the front page. If you have any questions all you have to do is post.

Thanks for the comments.

Temps are running Seti with CPU @ 100%. Has been running for 48 hours no problems. Using a 300W Aopen PS for power and Global Win FOP38 with thermal paste for HSF. Temp drops well below 50 when idle.

Temp is now up to 55 (with in case 41), ambient is around 34 at the moment - summer in Oz. I have a case fan (sucking at the front) and the PS fan seems to blow a fair amount of hot air out the back. I gather this is OK.

I will review the beginners guide - most if the info I have to date is from tomshardware..

Thanks, I appreciate the insight:)

my inadequatetly ventilated case dropped 5-6 degrees just by taking the sides off. then i took the case fans out and use them to cool my ram and hard drives (the extra air dropped the cpu temp another 2 degrees).

open case rules unless youve got a modded case

EDIT - taking the sides off dropped the cpu temp 5-6 degrees is what i meant to say.

Thanks Heavy.

Hmmm food for thought.

Just gone midnight - ambient must be around 20 something and case still around 38-39 and CPU coming down by the same amount ie 52-53.

Loathe to take the sides off - with the PS and FOP38, pretty noisy already.

Next plan might be to tidy the box up and see if I can improve the airflow a little - cabling a bit of a mess at the moment.

yeah - i agree keeping the sides on is the preferred way to go.
i just know i wouldnt be able to achieve this oc with my case together.
i run at 45idle and 49 load which would be well into the upper 50's with my case together.
one of these days i'll mod my case but until then ill just keep the can of dust-off handy and deal with the noise.

Nice oc! But definitely watch the temps! My rigs all start getting funky around 50c (vagaries of monitoring hard/software!)
I have one pc that I can NOT get the case to cool down but a duct running cool air straight to the cpu works wonders: case temp 40c, cpu 41c. Most of the others (except for 1 cranky one right now LOL) run case temps around 26c and cpu around 42c under 100% load (seti rocks.)
I'd suggest another exhaust to start with, preferably under the psu in back- hot air in case BAD!

If you can get temps down to low 40s somewhere you should be in great shape!

Not sure, BUT- definitely avoid the Intel forums with it!

I'd have to agree. You need some extra fans blowing out of your case! you should be able to get case temps just a little higher then ambient with one or two more fans and some good cleaning up of cables etc... Then you should knowtice some improvements for sure.

It's also eay to fry your chip if you don't get more cooling in there:eek:

Thanks for all the comments people.

I've wound the speed back to default until I can attend to these things...first job when I get some time off.

I'll post the results when they come to hand:)

speaking of screwdriver accidents. I was mounting a HSF on MY machine a few weeks ago and the screwdriver I was using broke! It had a plastic handle (old) and I ended up taking a nice chunk out of the side of one of my DDR slots! still works though! Wheeew!

The moral of this story. Never do cooling mods with cheap screwdrivers! :D

I noticed a drop in temp after I converted all my cables to round.
allowed the air to flow better I geuss, and it was cheep and easy.
