View Full Version : Speeds not what speed tests say, IP changed too?
I have SBC Yahoo DSL and up iuntil a few days ago, because of the old wiring in this house, we could not get over 50k down or 60k up speeds. THe tech came ovver and iunstalled a bypass box the other day and when I go to DSLreports and choose the closest city I get 368k up and 1300k down (advertised is 368k/1500k. When I actually download something though, I cannot break 168k down or 60k up.

This is from DSLreports
Speed I am suppose to have (http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=speed7ag.jpg)
Also, my IP was changed, I'm not sure when I jsut noticed that whe I went to open a port today for Xfire, it started with a 70. instead of 68.
Your IP will change from time to time, some ISPs force the changes some don't.
Your actual speeds and your advertised speeds will depend on what you are downloading, how you download it, how your firewall works and the server you are downloading from. Other users with your ISP in the area will also influence your speeds.
Bandwidth testing sites usually use small packet transfers to test speeds ususally giving generous results.
Having said that there are large differences between your real speeds and your 'tested' speed. Try downlaods from different sites and at different times of day and see what you get
The distance from your house to the ISP server will also negatively influence the speeds at which you can download stuff.
So the speed test is off by 90% of the speed? I'm also closer than my friend who gets 768/300.
that's why I was surprised at such a large gap between tested and real speeds.
The tests probably use small packets and then multiply to get per sec speeds.
Try a few online test sites to see if you get consistent results.
Try ping tests with different packet sizes you may have problems transmitting larger packet sizes that would reduce real world download speeds

Every address on the net will have a different up/down speed. So the speed test location might have a good response while the site you wish to use has slower speeds.
This (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) speed test offers locations across the US so you can better see this.
And it's not only the line speeds it's the server you are connecting to, lots of variables.
