I recently purchased the Radeon 8500 and the d*mn Heatsink doesn't want to cooperate and come off. Has anyone attempted to remove this heatsink and if so what steps did you take? I heard a rumor that you have to put the card in the freezer but i'm luke-warm about placing my hardware in the fridge.
My plans:
Place thremaltake Ram Sinks to cool the DDR
Place a Thermaltake Blue orb to replace the existing heatsink.
I want to try and get up to 325/325

Yeah- put the card in an antistatic bag and pop it in the fridge for 30 mins or so.
BUT- For the ove of God, BE CAREFUL! I refer you here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44286) Not to put you off of this or anything, but just be very careful, and be sure to dilute the adhesive you use.

also if you dont want to put the card in the freezer then just play unreal or QuakeIII for an hour or two, power down, take the card out and wiggle it off WITH YOUR HANDS....do not use a screwdriver as you could easily damage you 200$ investment...

i just cut it off with a razor blade put between the cip and heatsink:D

I personally wouldnt bother removing the stock fan, it works great, just add some RAM sinks if your gonna do anything. But upgrading the fan with give negligible results at best. Better off spending $10. on a slot blower, put it below the AGP card and it will keep cool air moving on it constantly, this is the smartest thing to do, then add ram coolers if necessary.

Put the card in the freezer as long as you can. the more the better. i don't think 30 minutes is quite enough, more like an hour.

Well i tried this out with my Radeon 32MB DDR, I placed the card in the freezer for a hour and a half, and then attempted to remove the heatsink from the card. The epoxy wasn't brittle at all. I tried a twisting motion and I wasn't able to get the heatsink to move at all. I didn't attempt the screwdriver and creditcard trick cause i read what happened to that guy with the damage core. I will be reciceiving my thermaltake ram sinks very soon so i'm just going to epoxy those onto the ram, and place a slot cooler in the pci slot below the card. I was able to get my core up to 290 and i'm happy with that. I have an 8000 3dmark 2001 score and i'm happy with that.
PS. I am going to put the ramsinks on the bottom of the card, which is the top of the card when it is in the case.

Di4mond, you gave me an idea!!!!!! What if there was a way to "double cool" your CPU's, GPU's and Chipsets?! Does anyone know if it would help or hurt to not only have the regular heatsainks and fans on these parts mentioned above, but why not put some kind of cooling device on the cards and boards reverse side. I know it sounds alittle off, but remember that when using a peltier you have to seal up the back side as well as the "die" side so moisture won't biuld up. These "pins" that stick out of the back of the boards must have some kind of effect even if it is small.

diamond, there are new drivers, get em, performance is way up within 5-10% of Ti500 and QuakeIII "Optimizations" are out, and Smoothvision is in...
I agree with R&B that the stock is a very fine cooler .. And with a slot exhaust below it it'll flow cool air in .. thus a very good stock fan.
