C#...what's with it?

I've heard of C, C++ and Objective C...but when I heard about C#, I thought...'why?'

Could somebody explain what it is and why we would need yet another C variant?...

I haven't done much research, just thought it would be easier to ask some smart guys

From what I have read c# (reads C sharp) is supposed to have the ease of visual basic and most of the power of c++...
