Basically where I am looking at settling down will have electricity included in the rent as its in the Presidio Trust system. They cover electricity and all the other costs are paid by the tenent.
Would you think that the first thing you would do would be to find as many boxes as possible..and make a linux cluster? Would you think that would be cool to get on craigslist and put out a call for all old computers that are being thrown away and fill a basement with PC's?
What are yours thoughts?

Just make sure they won't raise your rent if you use too much electricity. ;)

I lived in a similar place, but it stated that if you used an "Excessive" amount of power, they would investigate the premise, with no notification to you. I would watch out if you do so.

Set up a "few" computers.
Average amount is $10 per pc per month.
Average.
So if you set up 2-4 you should be fine & make a very nice
contribution in the process.

LOL I was wondering why my bill was so high. Plus the little 7,000 btu portable a/c unit I just bought to keep cool air on most of my farm 24/7 isn't going to help any. :bang head

Landlords in most all of our 50 states cannot enter your premise without informing you first.....by law. ;)
Farm till they bitch then back it off a notch for stability. :p

Everything is in storage since I moved from Seattle. So when I get all my stuff back I should have I think 2-3 working. And later in the year I am gonna step up to a 64 system. But I am in San Fran, land of the throw away PC.

LMFAO!!! I actually laughed out loud on that one...correction, still laughing :D
I'd say 7-10 or so, and check out your lease agreement. But you'd probably be best off to see what it says about excessive use and base your figures off of that.
Edit: if you go diskless and headless you should be able to get away with more....and you could always build some type of cabnit to hide some of them in so that if the landlord "investigates" he'll find next to nothing. :sn: although you would have to figure out a way to hide the fat power cable going into the back :D

I haven't seen MailCall in a LONG time.

YES!! IF I don't need to pay my own power bill, heck, I'll fill my basement up with foldersssss and just crank the a/c all the way up!!! actually, I'll just bought a stand alone a/c unit just for the foldersssss!!! :santa:
building folders isn't much, it's running them 24/7 full load the biggest problem for home farmer!! just ask people like Pete about it ;)

Yes, yes, and...ummmm...yes! Fill a room up with as many boxes as the breaker can handle! When the breaker blows you just start playing the elimination game. Take one rig out at a time until it becomes stable :bday:
EDIT! Slightly off topic
I always thought that renting an apartment wasn't a very good idea, that it is wiser to invest in a piece of property. I never even thought about something like that though! Maybe it isn't such a bad idea to rent after all, it may be cheaper. I have always said that whenever I move out of my parents house, I'm immediately investing in a house, an apartment wasn't even something I would think about considering. But now I'm not sure, it is definitely an open option, not having to pay for electricity (by traditional means that is) sounds really tempting, and I'm sure I could easily find an apartment that does this, because AFAIK, most do this anyway.
oh, btw, you are lucky to be living in a place where you can just walk the streets, and find thrown out PCs. Thank god for people that don't care about our environment!...that didn't come out right, but I think you know what I mean :D

I say go for it. I think that the only reason they worry if there is excessive electicity consumption, is that is a red flag that you might have a meth lab. You can obviously prove you dont, so it shouldnt be a problem. I keep any extra borgs I have at work, since my office is a huge basement with cool temps and plenty of room. I dont have to worry about power either.

Don;t know how to tell you this..but do the following. Perform a MLS search of homes in the San Francisco Bay Area and get back to me :D
1 million dollars is considered a crap home here. The apartment is really the only option in this market.
I'll keep you all in the loop regarding my farming and such.

You don't need to tell me that, I know that California is a rip off place to live. My uncle used to live there. I actually don't like CA. I enjoyed it when I was visiting, but there are just too many things about CA that **** me off...bah, but that's just me, and off topic. :bang head
EDIT!
I just realized something I said...
When I said cheaper, I was referring to my area, I wasn't even thinking about you living in CA... I guess that's why you thought I didn't know about the insane real estate prices over there, sorry, my fault. I really did know though, that's actually one of the things that I don't like about CA :D

yup and zero spam. I have a lot of questions what can I say. Heck, I built 3 systems thanks to this place, (Xeons, AMD XP, and Intel Socket T), Watercooled, learned Linux, so yeah that takes care of it

with notice they can...a land lord can come in anytime they please but they must give notice first...it is a LAW and a renter can prosecute for it.

Dicecca is correct. A paying tenant has a right to domcile and privacy. If a rentOR wants to enter, he/she will have to enter with the Law and court order. In times of emergency there may be some reason to excuse the intrusion<spam breaker>
If you want to fold consider cutting power in some other areas. Replace most lightbulbs with flourescents except where the ladies do makeup (Wifes rule). Reduce energy lost for cooling, as for heat, the rigs actually help. The average PC uses about 100 watts with just CPU, Video and HD running. Layers run at about 90 watts with no HD. I have one chandeler in this house that draws 300-360 watts (thats three rigs for those counting). You can also negotiate a little extra for the power usage if you run more than 3-4 rigs, it's fair and some people are willing to be fair when you are.
