I'm new to this, but I've been able to O/C my Intel PIII 800e up to about 894 with no problem by cranking the FSB on my bios to 112mhz opposed to the default 100. I noticed a considerable peformance increase in Windows XP (yummy). Anyways, I'm stuck here because I can't seem to raise the value more than 112. Is this all my Motherboard(VIA?) will ever allow and if not...how to I overclock the little bugger...i want 133 :D

Three things might help you go farther: 1) more cooling, 2) even more cooling, and 3) a slight increase in CPU core voltage.

Welcome to OCer's.com :)

As stated above...cooling, cooling and cooling. Would also be able to help a bit more if ya let us know about the sys(mobo, ram, temps, etc. etc)

Thx for the welcome :) I got interested in O/Cing when I saw the difference in results in 3DMark2001 with 2 cards the same, but one overclocked a bit.

Anyways...I'm looking @ my receipt here from my system:

MHOUSTON M869C mobo...not too popular apparently - 100mhz FSB

RAM - 128MB PC100 RAM

Cooling - Default CPU fan. I've been told that an Alpha fan + sink would be the best upgrade here. A guy I know told me to install this Motherboard Monitor software but my temperature always reads out as 0C...maybe I don't have any temp sensors?

I'm thinking that I should upgrade my ram to 133 if I'm going to O/C my FSB to 133 also...is this correct?

Here's the site for my mobo:

http://www.houstontechnology.com/products/via/M869C-ATX.htm

I'm curious because it says it only supports up to 600mhz Pentium processors (says this in my manual also), but my processor is clearly a PIII 800e.

Ouch!! It might be your RAM!
You'll need PC-133 to reach at least 133fsb.. and get a good cooler.

Yes you can't oveclock your ram.. Your ram runs at which bus your ever on.. ie: if I were to run 115 FSB then my ram pc-100 would run at that speed.

Alright, so once I grab my new pc133+ ram and get tons of cooling I think i still have a problem...in my BIOS settings i can change the value of the CPU Bus Frequency...it will only let me set it from 100-112...how can i O/C to 133 when the BIOS only allows up to 112

btw, I've looked rreeeeeeally hard for a bios flash to get the latest bios, but couldn't find anything...

Thats weird on your motherboard page it says it can only support up to PC-100 and.... No bios flash! Weird motherboard ... Do you have spare that you can spend out? Consider buying a Asus TUSL2.

lol Yodums, does that ASUS mobo have an AGP 4x slot...because I just ordered an ATI Radeon 8500...agp only...I think I'll be purchasing another motherboard in the near future, since the one I got with my system doesn't look too promising...I got the system really cheap at ipc.ca ...i should'ave looked into the mobo coming with it a little more...but for now I'll just cuddle up with my radeon :)

Yes mainly all the boards that had been made for the past 1-2 years have had AGP 4x slots

just a thought, you might want to go with at least 256mg of Ram to fully utilize Windows XP

512mg or more would be even greater

just a thought

True since the 128 is recommended.. And you'll always want to pass Microsoft's recommendations..
