my previous sata 7200 wd800 raid 0 system that HDTACH said got 79MB/sec. could extract rar's of a full dvd set 4.4gb in 3 mins and 47 seconds. I just upgraded to two 10,000 rpm sata150 raptures and am a little sceptical by the speed, but not disapointed unless they really are slower than the average setup. I have a a8n-sli premium with 3800+ x2 and 2 gigs of corsair. anyways, hdtach says my average read is 105MB/sec and I was really hopping for atleast 130MB. I am on x64 with latest bios, drivers. Although I can now extract a full dvd set in 1 min and 35 secs which is 2.3x faster than before, the price difference was about 4x more.
Here is my HDTACH:

The second pic came from a tester who has 16k block size. I just found out Im using 64k block size, nvidia said it was the most optimized size.. I also am NTFS. Now if I re do everything using 16k will I get a 20% gain? I can say there's a few mixed stories out there, some prefer 16k, others prefer 128k. But on average 64k seems dominate. One article suggested 16k is better for suqential reads but 64k is better for sequential writes. So if I went to 16k HDtach may read 130MB average read but it will take longer to extract a 4.43GB DVD archive (where's hdtach's write tests??)..
thanks for any ideas.
