yes you need an agp slot to plug in an AGP video card.....this is a lot different from pci...
AGP is is just like the other slots- it needs a hole in the case so you can attach your monitor to it. Only video cards go in an AGP slot.
If you do not have a AGP slot in your machine, you will need to upgrade your motherboard and possibly other components before you can get and use an AGP card. Unfortunate, because all the best cards are only made in AGP versions. If you don't play many games tho, a PCI-based video card will probably work just fine.

AGP stands for Accelerated Graphics Port. AGP cards are capable of a higher and faster data transfer rate than PCI graphic cards.
The current PCI bus supports a data transfer rate up to 132 MB/s, while AGP (at 66MHz) supports up to 533 MB/s! AGP attains this high transfer rate due to it's ability to transfer data on both the rising and falling edges of the 66MHz clock, and through new design advances that have made data transfer modes more efficient.
If you dont have an AGP slot You'll need to buy a PCI Graphics card or upgrade your mobo like Monster mentioned
